It was several weeks after the opening of the hotel, and business was warming up, Sweetheart thought as she went over her books and bills in the kitchen. She'd had a couple of sold out nights already, and she'd just made arrangements for two guests to stay long term. They were both on the third floor. But the surprising amount of business she'd been doing, especially opening the hotel during mealtimes as a sort of diner, had been very popular. In fact, it had pushed her income well beyond what she'd hoped to make!
There was a downside, however, and that was the fact that her original calculations for the amount of food Sweetheart would need was off. Worse yet, it was winter now, and the prices would be higher than they had been in the fall. But there there was no getting around it, she needed potatoes, and carrots and barley for the vegetable stew she liked to serve. In winter, everyone liked a warm meal. Apples, she still had plenty of, thankfully, so if she could make the lettuce and spinach hold out, she would be able to keep serving apple salad. And Apple pies and apple cider, apple tart and apple dumpling.
Speaking of apple tarts, Sweetheart set down her account books and quickly took a glance inside the oven. Yes, the last batch were done. She slid an oven mitt over a hoof and pulled the tray out, setting it aside to cool. Somewhere outside, the clock tower rang the hour. The earth pony listened to the sound with mild sense of belonging and pride. It was the lunch hour. Already some stragglers were beginning to file in the door and line up, though the day didn't look especially busy. Most of the homesteaders would probably be staying home today.
