Even seeing what Soarin was going for, and understanding why he'd chosen that option, Fleet's heart jumped in her throat the moment she saw Soarin' drop like that. No matter how well trained you were, seeing one of your wingmates drop out of the sky was terrifying. The temptation to dive after him and try to 'catch' him was quite strong, even knowing it was a controlled fall. Or, well, almost. The important part was that he got in control of it before he hit the ground. With a sigh of relief, Fleet tucked her own wings in and started her descent. It was almost over now. Within minutes, she'd have warmth, food, and much needed rest. Snapping her wings open again, Something occurred to Fleetfoot. Something she should have thought about sooner. She didn't have Soarin's wingspan. She didn't have his strength, either. She didn't even have, to put it delicately, as much air resistance as he had. This drop was going to be a lot harder to slow. Flapping frantically, the Wonderbolt mare tried not to picture a chicken trying to fly. She really hoped she didn't resemble that. She also tried not to picture, in those desperate moments, the sound and sight of countless vials of medicine tinkling and shattering on the ground. Very precious medicine that was needed to save lives. Her feet hit the ground hard, and with a little whimper, she crumpled to her knees to lessen the shock. Anything less, and she'd have four broken legs. But... and this was the important part, the part that made Fleetfoot freeze stock still and listen, wings still extended mid-stroke.... the shipment did not strike the ground. Though with mere inches to spare, and though it clinked a little alarmingly, It had made it through the "landing" (if you could call it that!) intact. Fleet remained frozen yet a moment longer, wings poised. She seemed unaware of the ponies, citizens of Fairflanks, rushing out to meet them. Then she folded her wings and with a heave, regained her footing. She looked up at Soarin' and gave him a shaky smile. "Well, we made it." |
