The Great and Powerful Student! {Dinky/Trixie}

It was a new day! Birds were chirping, ponies were happy, and Dinky was out to play! She felt like she wanted to meet somepony new today! She'd broaden her horizons! Hooray for vocabulary! Everything was bright and new, and nothing was going to distract her from- TRIXIE!!!!!!! Dinky's entire train of thought was thrown off the rails and into the depths of her mind where it crashed and burn. Many ideas died in that wreck. But, the Great and Powerful Trixie was here! Again! Dinky could get more lessons from Trixie! How did she look? Was her mane okay? Had her horn grown any? How much more had she improved... Heh... Dinky wasn't nervous~. 'Course not! That'd be silly... Dinky snuck through the market, until she came up beside the magician. She was so Great and Powerful... Dinky couldn't focus enough to see what she was doing. Her entire focus was on the wonderful unicorn that had given her lessons. "Hi Trixie..."

Having decided to settle down in Ponyville for a little while as she worked on that whole friendship thing, Trixie figured it would be a good time to try and get some better quality stuff for her wagon. While the stuff Braeburn had given her was pragmatic and good for the road, Trixie felt something a little more comfortable would work for being in one spot. Some fluffier pillows, softer sheets and blankets, etc.

But for now Trixie was going to enjoy some lunch, and was looking over some carrots. She was tempted to get some apples, but that one pony from the show was there. Applesnap or something? Whatever, Trixie had hogtied her and stuffed an apple in her face; she doubted that she would want to deal with Trixie. Granted, Trixie would talk with her later, but today was supposed to be a relaxing day; no emotional distress for now.

Which meant Trixie was in a generally good mood when a familiar little unicorn foal had ran up to her and said hi.

”Oh hey there…Dinky,”’ Trixie replied, remembering the foals name. Trixie had helped her with some spells back in the winter,”How’s the magic going. Did you work on those spells Trixie taught you?”

IT WAS TRIXIE, IT WAS TRIXIE, IT WAS TRIXIE! It was really, really, really, really her! She was so much more Great and Powerful than Dinky remembered! "Yes, Trixie! I've practiced a whole lot! Though, I think I scared my Momma once when one of my firework illusions went off inside..." It was a funny, and embarrassing memory. Now, they made sure to keep the window shut whenever Dinky was practicing magic outside. "So, how have you been Trixie? Have you done any shows?"

”Trixie’s been there, done that,” she replied, thinking about her own times of scaring her family with the firework spells,”Maybe should teach you a muffled version of the spell for practice purposes…”

Actually, she should probably have started with that, but admittedly it wasn’t as much fun without the noise. Besides, technically doing two spells at once was better practice, since you had the sound and lights. But if she wanted to practice just manipulating the fireworks into shapes a muffled version would be better…

Trixie’s been doing fine. Did a few shows up in the Crystal Empire to help them get back on their hooves,” she replied, being a little proud to have been involved in the whole thing. Plus they really needed some good memories after all that Sombra business, and Trixie was perfectly fine to provide them.

”Decided to come back down to Ponyville for a while though, so if you wanted a couple more lessons or help with a show or something you’ll get a chance.”

Dinky was a bit excited at the thought of learning another spell from Trixie, but the moment that the Crystal Empire was brought up, she averted her eyes. Dinky was still in trouble with her Momma over that. She had just wanted to help those ponies! And she couldn't have just left her friends to go alone! Dinky was, if anything, a loyal friend! But, she quickly shoved those thoughts to the side at the thought of learning more from Trixie. "You can teach me more? Yay!" Dinky broke into a giddy giggle, bouncing up and down, and clapping her hooves. Magic was SO much fun! And with a unicorn like Trixie, she was sure to have double the fun! "What can you teach me first?!" Dinky was ready to get started... immediately!

Trixie noticed the glancing away when she mentioned the Crystal Empire, but figured it was probably not something worth bothering her about. This was especially true after she started hopping around like a bunny rabbit wanting to have a lesson right now.

”Well, Trixie was wanting to get some lunch first,” she replied,”but maybe after that we do a spell or two.”

Since she was still by the carrot stand, she levitated a few bits over and get her carrots. Taking a bite out of one, she thought about something.

”But if you want, you can show Trixie what you’ve learned in the meantime, you know, get an idea of your progress or whatever.”

Lunch and a show was always a good thing.

Ooh, show Trixie everything she had learned? Dinky slowly began to realize where they were. "Y-You mean... In front of all of these ponies?" As, heheh, wonderful as that sounded, Dinky wasn't experienced in performing in front of a large group of ponies... All of those eyes on her, watching her every move, judging every act of magic... Oh, she was scaring herself.

Trixie forgot that Dinky wasn’t a performance mare; for Trixie, doing magic in front of a bunch of strangers was par for herself. But she was willing to adjust for her little protégé here; had to be comfortable with your surroundings to do good magic. With a little dismissive wave of her hoof, Trixie worked to assure her student it was no problem.

”Relax, we don’t have to do it here if you don’t want to. We can find somewhere else to practice.”

Taking a bite of her carrot, Trixie placed the rest in some pockets inside her cape before walking off away from the marketplace, making sure that Dinky was close enough to follow her. There was probably some empty spot or park or something that they could work in where nopony else could bother them and Dinky didn’t have to deal with stage fright.

Twilight Sparkle was in the park, enjoying some 'much needed' sunshine. Granted she had a book wit her - as usual, but Princess Celestia had all but insisted she get out more and socialize. So here she was in the park at a nice shady spot, thinking that no one would come around, but a noise behind her caught her attention.

Turning around, she noticed Trixie with a rather young unicorn. Since she figured after the project the two unicorns worked on alongside Princess Luna, the two would be at least friends of a sort, right? So she waved to the two of them. "Hello there, Trixie!" The purple unicorn called out. "Who's your new friend?" It was nice to see the previously egotistical pony extending her boundaries a bit too.

Omigosh... Omigosh... Omigosh! It was Twilight Sparkle! The Element of Magic! What if Twilight helped her with her magic too? She'd have the Great and Powerful Trixie, and Celestia's student helping her! Just the thought made her tingle all over with excitement! "I-I'm not just her friend! She's, like, my mentor! My teacher! She's the Great and Powerful Trixie!" Her eyes sparkled, she grinned with pure happiness. "She taught me magic, and she's inspired me, and she's the best ever!" Dinky didn't realize how much she was obsessing over her, but she did it nonetheless.

Figuring the park a good spot, Trixie led Dinky in its direction. Her mind was already working on trying to figure out what to teach Dinky when the voice of a familiar purple unicorn was heard. Before Trixie could respond to the greeting, the Greatly Overeager student of hers went for introductions. The nice bit of flattery she added was a nice touch, causing Trixie to give Twilight one of her trademark slightly smug smiles.

”This here is Dinky Hooves, and what she says is true; Trixie has taken her on as sort of a student in magic. We were just on our way to practice.”

Student-inflated ego or not, Trixie had to admit her relationship with Twilight had improved as of late. Not wanting to regress, she figured she might as well invite her for the ride.

”If you want, you can join us.”

Before she knew it, the young unicorn had introduced herself and was clearly awestruck by the fact Trixie was teaching her magic. But in hearing the name Dinky Hooves mentioned by Trixie, Twilight recalled the conversation she had with her mother, Derpy, and was tempted to ask if she wouldn't mind a bit more magical advice...that is, if Trixie didn't mind, of course (even though the blue unicorn was giving one of those smug 'see-I-can-be-better-than-you' looks). But to her surprise, Trixie invited her to join them for Dinky's practice.

Maybe those friendship discussions are paying off. Twilight though to herself, storing the book away into her saddlebags and trotted over. "If you don't mind at all." She replied, before turning to Dinky. "I actually spoke with your mom the other day; she stopped by the library and wanted to know how best to support you in your magical studies." Maybe it would be best to hold off on her own experiences with magic until she saw what Dinky was capable of, but at least the basics would be a start. "She wanted to know if you would possibly be interested in joining Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, and asked what I knew about it, as well as anything she should keep an eye out for as far as magical illnesses and such."

Momma talked to Twilight? Dinky listened, her smile slowly growing wider. Celestia's School! "I-I am interested! I'm super interested! It's one of my dreams!" Just about everything else said between the unicorns had suddenly been dropped from Dinky's mind as she fantasized about that prestigious school. Oh, she could imagine it... One day, graduating from that school, being a full grown unicorn... A brilliant, independent mare with the magical ability and determination to do anything her heart desired... Dinky daydreamed, happily.

Dinky wanted to go to Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns? Not surprising really; any unicorn with an interest in magic seemed to want to go there. But why did Derpy ask Twilight about that and not Trixie? Trixie could sense some jealousy flaring up, but after a moment’s thought she calmed down. They both lived in the town, and Trixie never really mentioned having gone there. It was natural Derpy would turn to a friend she knew; it had nothing to do with liking Twilight better or anything silly like that.

Before they could even consider that dream, however, it seemed they were going to need to prod Dinky out of whatever daydream she had fallen into about the school. Trixie, being by Dinky, gave a small nudge with her hoof.

”Well if you want to make that dream come true we got some work to do.”

She gave Dinky a minute to snap out of her daydream before continuing.

”So then, why don’t you start by showing Twilight here what Trixie taught you,” she said, admittedly part wanting to gauge Dinky’s skill, part wanting to show Twilight that Trixie could in fact teach a pony some spells.

Some habits died hard after all.

She had to smile in hearing Dinky's response in wanting to go to Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. Any unicorn with a good penchant for magic got in after an entrance exam - which Twilight would have failed at - but the parents had to send in a request first. The little unicorn filly's response was so very much like Twilight Sparkle's when she was a young unicorn herself, eager to learn all she could about magic and figure out what she wanted to do with it. She figured that Dinky had similar dreams...dreams that Trixie was trying to snap her out of and get to practicing. At first, the purple unicorn wanted to object to breaking Dinky's daydream, but decided not to say anything and watch just what the illusionist taught her...which she hoped was something other than fireworks.

To be honest, any unicorn could teach a bit about their own brand of magic, but there were still the basics before they found out what specific sort of magic they had. Would they become a seamstress like Rarity? An illusionist like Trixie? Making candies? Creating books? Anything was possible. Although Twilight had to mention just one little thing. "To be honest, I still am technically a student; I was told that I could continue my studies here in Ponyville. Since my own magic specifically deals in - well, magic itself, that gives me a lot to read and learn."
