Okay, as one of the Mane 6 of the series, I have to input my two bits here.
First off: I understand that becoming an alicorn is a very lengthy process...which was why it took several seasons for Twilight to be 'ready' to become a Princess in her own right. And honestly, she wasn't even sure what was happening; she was tasked but Celestia to solve Starswirl's last spell, which she did. And even AFTER becoming an alicorn, Twilight still felt awkward about the wings and wearing the crown.
And to be honest, we sorta knew the Princess thing was coming for Twilight; the other five got necklaces while the Element of Magic gets a nice crown?
And while Twilight can take charge if she has to (like when Celestia and Luna go missing in the season 4 premier), she considers herself JUST as equal as her friends are. The bond between her friends helped make her what she is, and will continue to do so in episodes to come.
And to be fair, it wasn't like Twilight ASKED to become part of the Elements of Harmony or be really good at magic...she just IS. With time and mentoring from Celestia, Twilight has grown in skill. Sure she's the local bookworm/librarian, and sure she's great at magic...but it was the bond she shared with her FRIENDS that truly made her special. And isn't that what life's all about? The geek, the jock, the wallflower, the country girl, the fashionista, and the party girl... These six different stereotypes coming together with a common bond...now THAT is worth something.
I honestly hope that you decide to do how it goes in the show, but I'm open to working it another way too. Some people may hate the 'Twilicorn', but even after receiving wings and a crown, she's still the same 'nerdy' Twilight we know and love.
I've said my peace. I'll hush up now.
