Fox was still working through her shock at seeing Quill when everything went really dark. She was about to reassure Quill when the screech sent her running. "Darn it, Quill". She started running after Quill. "Quill, slow down. We'll be safer if you keep calm. I know what I'm doing here".
It was a lie but she had to stop Quill from running into more trouble. She increased her pace so that she was alongside Quill before trying to bring her to the ground using a technique she had seen her older brothers use on each other while she was reading back when she was a filly. Namely, jump on her and force her off her feet.
Quill jumps at the sound of Fox Fire's voice and looks at her in shock, her steps slowing down. She seems to have completely forgotten that Fox was present at the beginning of the dream, and realizing that she's here now is strange to her.
"Fox? What are you doing here? No one's ever here!" She stops completely, confused by her own words. "Never here...? What does that...?" Then the ground shakes and she starts running again, but in classic dream style, she moves slowly. This has no effect on Fox, who can still move as normal. A bright light appears up ahead, marking their destination.
Fox watched as she caught up to Quill, smiling as she passed by. "Follow me, I think I can explain what's happening". She looked ahead at the light and smiled as she drew her sword. If there was trouble on the other side of the light then she would at least be ready to take it on.
Of course the fact that she had little or no idea how to fight with a sword was a bit of a worry but she was willing to do whatever it took to get herself and Quill out of the situation they were in.
Quill begins to run after Fox, though she's still unable to move very quickly. She glances over her shoulder often, obviously terrified of the thing that's chasing them.
"Where did you get a sword?!" She says, breathing heavily. In front of them, the light draws closer and before Fox has a chance to answer, they're through it. The ground turns to hard-packed, dry, rocky dirt. The sky is grey, as if the sun had just set, or was about to rise. Red, diamond-shaped lights dot the expanse of it. Ahead of the two ponies is a cliff, and Quill finds herself suddenly able to run at full speed. She skids to a stop just before she flies over the edge.
"Oh no oh no ohnoohnoohno" She dances on her hooves anxiously, looking around for any way across and finding none. The pegasus bites her lip and sighs, knowing what she has to do. "Fox, I'm going to have to carry you. The only way across is to fly." At the end of this statement, she flaps her wings experimentally, only hoping she's strong enough to carry both of them.
Fxo smiled as she placed a reassuring hoof on Quill's shoulder. "Take a moment to calm down before we worry about getting down from here". She looked at the sword and smiled as she realised that Quill had no idea what was happening. "There is something I need to tell you. The reason I'm here is because the last time you went to sleep in Ponyville, you stayed asleep and nopony could wake you up. A lot of ponies didn't so Princess Luna asked any of the ponies who were still awake to go into the affected ponies minds to help them. I volunteered to help you so I'm here".
She stepped closer to Quill andlooked her straight in the eyes. "I'm here to wake you up. That's how I got the sword and the armour. I, we can do things which we normally wouldn't be able to". She smiled. "I know it's a lot of information but if you believe you can do something you can do it. I believe you can fly us out of here and all you need to do is believe it".
Fox was unsure if Quill believed her but if she knew what was really going on it would only make things easier.
The pegasus looks doubtful, but to her credit tries to convince herself the words are true. She closes her eyes and takes a deep, if somewhat shaky breath before spreading her wings with a bit more confidence. She steps closer to the cliff and jumps straight up, hovering in the air above her friend. Wrapping her hooves around the unicorn, she takes them up, struggling some and pushes them forward over the cliff.
For several moments, they glide smoothly. Quill can be heard muttering to herself, variations of "I can do it," and "I'm okay." But then her wings lock up and her muttering increases. She begins to panic, trying to believe she could fly. She repeats her mantra louder and more frantically, practically shouting it just before her wings disappear and they plummet towards the ground.
Fox barely helled back a yell as they plummeted towards the ground, trying not to panic as she looked up at Quill. "Quill, keep holding on to me, I have an idea". She had lifted fairly big objects before with her telekinesis but if this was to work it was going to be a whole new level.
She looked at the ground, approaching at high speed as she concentrated, her horn starting to glow. "I can do this".
She gritted her teeth as she saw the glow from her horn spreading across her and Quill's bodies. "I can do this".
She groaned as the glow covered both of them, her powers seeming to slow them plummet down. "Keep holding on, I can do this, Darn it!".
Noting the ground getting very close now, Fox looked up at Quill. "I think I can do this". The question was were they slow enough now.
Quill wasn't sure what was happening, but she held tight to her friend and tried to stop panicking. It's only when they began to slow down that it occurs to her that Fox has magical abilities, though the extent to which she's able to use them still surprises her.
The two hit the ground hard, but not dangerously so. Quill struggles to stand, legs shaky after the fall. She finds herself unable to look at Fox and tears begin to well up in her eyes.
"I...I'm sorry, Fox." She paws at the ground, stirring the dirt around. "I couldn't believe hard enough. I couldn't trust myself. I'm so sorry." She sniffles, rubbing her foreleg with a hoof. She'd almost gotten them killed.
Fox smiled ashe she hugged Quill, hiding a little pain from her forehooves caused by the landing. "It's alright Quill, I should have worked out another way to get down. Before Princess Luna sent me here she explained that as long as I remember this is a dream, your dream, I can do things which I wouldn't normally be able to do". She grinned. "Hence the armour and thw sword".
She looked Quill in the eyes and smiled. "You're not used to this yet, I think you can alter this state as well, judging by the fact that your wings vanished. You just need to get used to this",
She smiles weakly at Fox Fire and takes a deep breath, trying to steady herself.
"R-right...a dream. Just a dream." Something seems to occur to her, and confusion crosses her face. "But...if it's a dream, then why didn't I wake up? I know this dream. I always wake up right before I hit the ground." She chews on her lip thoughtfully. "You said something about it, before we jumped. Something about Princess Luna?" She wracks her brain and tries to remember exactly what it was that the unicorn had said, but after the terror of plummeting from the air, nothing comes to mind. Which is just as well, she supposes, since the scene around her fades to grey.
The next moment, the two ponies find themselves in a dark, enclosed space. At first Quill thinks they've started the nightmare over, but soon she realizes that it's actual darkness, not just solid black. She takes a breath to calm herself and tests to see if she has her wings back. Much to her dismay, she doesn't, though she isn't sure why it bothers her so much since she rarely uses them anyway. Music plays nearby, though muffled in such a way to suggest that the source isn't in the dark room. In the room next door, probably. After a few moments of soft harp, a sweet voice drifts through to them.
A thousand days, another time The moons have come to pass. But still I feel that place inside That's made from shattered glass.
Once, you and I were close, But age destroyed our bond. I miss you so, but not the you you're now.
Fade, fade away. Drifting on a sea of light. Fade, fade away. You left me in an endless night. Fade, fade, fade...
True to the lyrics, the music fades, leaving Fox and Quill in silence. After a moment, the pegasus-made-earth pony breaks it.
Fox frowned as she listened to the song and smiled at Quill's comment. That certainly made sense with what she had discovered so far. "Are you okay?". She glanced around as she started walking in the direction the singing had been coming from.
She smiled as she looked back at Quill. "Come on, I've found you so we're halfway out of this mess". She just hoped she sounded more confident than she felt.
A few steps forward and both of the ponies bump into a wall. Quill feels her way along this wall until she comes to a door, which she opens. The dark room is flooded with light, revealing that it's full of...nothing, really. It's just an empty room that they've been standing in. However, the room that lies through the doorway in front of them is very different.
Inside is a floor made of cloud, though the walls are wood. Various instruments lay scattered all over, including the harp they'd heard earlier. As one might guess, a pony sits at the harp. She's leaning against it, looking downtrodden.
A step into the room reveals to Quill that either she cannot walk on clouds due to her missing wings, or simply no one can step on these clouds. It makes no difference either way, since there's a normal floor below the clouds. She walks forward toward the pony, who has a grey coat and a soft pink mane.
"Excuse me," she says, addressing the harpist. "We...we heard you singing earlier. Your voice is beautiful, but...are you okay?"
Fox smiled as she stepped into the room, looking around as she walked over to the pony by the harp. Fox looked over at Quill and smiled before turning to the pony. "I'm Fox, this is Quill. Is there anything we can do to help you?".
The pony looks up at them, eyes distant for a moment before she seems to really see them. She straightens up on her stool and smiles sorrowfully at the two.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize anypony was around." She pauses for a moment before she answers either of their questions. "...Yes, I'm alright. I just...there's somepony I wish I could go to, but I can't." Quill gives her a curious look, seeming almost worried about her.
"Why can't you go to them?" She asks softly, though she has a bad feeling about the answer she'll receive. She isn't sure what it is, but if this truly is a dream, then it probably has something to do with one of her stories. Quill was not one to write happy endings, or even happy beginnings. She tries to think of which one this could be, going through each of her characters, trying to remember if any could play the harp. A name comes to her after a moment, and she speaks it while the pony is still silent. "Rose Harmony, right? We want to help. What happened to the pony you wish you could join?"
Fox smiled as she listened to Quill. She was momentarily surprised that Quill remembered the ponies name until she remembered that all of this was based on her mind. She nodded as Quill asked Rose about the pony she was talking abouit.
Fox smiled and put her hoof on Quill's shoulder glad that she seemed to be becoming less withdrawn as time progressed.
