For a moment, everything seemed to hesitate. Even Sombra had a startled stare upon his face. Topaz's fury and sudden courage were so unexpected, so unusual, coming from the crystal mare, that it seemed nopony knew what to do next. If gentle, retiring, shy Topaz could be so fierce, then nothing was impossible. The world balanced upon the point of a needle, waiting to fall to one side or another. Then Sombra sneered and the air around them turned icy cold. The spire seemed to be made no longer of crystal, but by colored ice, frigid and treacherous. Sombra gathered his wicked power, and a blast of icy air, like a solid object itself, stuck Topaz hard in the chest. There was no purchase on the slippery floor. She and Dinky were both forcibly thrown off the landing and into open air. The earth about the spire, bleak and cracked, seemed to rush up to meet them. "I don't want that." It was a strange thought. It went through Topaz's mind, but it clearly didn't belong to her. A second later, the crystal mare would find her fall interrupted by rose vines that had burst up out of the gound in an instant. They stretched and yielded at first, then held her fast, stopping her deadly fall, but trapping her within a tangle. Dinky, too, was caught and cradled softly with her. Though the vines had thorns, (sharp and wicked looking ones, too!) Not a single one was turned against either pony, and here and there a rose, in a deep blue color that seemed to glow, bloomed. Again, the world seemed to hesitate. Then there was a feeling in the air, a shared thought not quite put into words. Remembrances of blankets lent, food shared, cuts and bruises mended, and hugs given when nothing else could be done. It was a feeling of loving gratitude. Vines parted, wove and intertwined to create a safe and sturdy bridge from Topaz, back to the tower stair. She could take the stair down, and escape with Dinky, if she so wished. Otherwise, Sombra waited above and would probably still need to be faced. |
