These ideas are still fairly scattered and random, but I thought I would put them out for general discussion before I organized them into an official writeup. Please post Raves, rants, reviews, criticism, comments, questions and any other form of acknowledgement you may be inclined to give! Thanks!
Seaponies are magical aquatic ponies with long prehensile tails and fins. They can breathe equally well both in air and water, whether it be fresh or salt water. They can tolerate chlorinated water for a time, but such water will eventually make them ill. They have very moist skin, and will dehydrate within a matter of hours if they are removed from water, and without legs to move around with, are extraordinarily helpless on land. Seaponies are playful and frivilous as a general rule, and are great collectors of things, especially mysterious or beautiful things. Unfortunately, as the age-old method of disposing of unwanted magical artifacts has been to throw them into a body of water, such as rivers and oceans, Seaponies have come into possession of a good many of these.
Seaponies form close family bonds, not with their parents, who lack some of the maternal and paternal instincts of land ponies, but with their sibling-group, which may include up to a dozen brothers and sisters all born at the same time. Sibling groups will often band together, living in caves, structures grown from coral reefs, large shells, or even sunken ships, anything they can find, until such time as they choose a mate. They have no organized government and no laws, but status is determined by how many possessions a seapony has, and the relative wealth of their family.
They have, of course, always recognized the beauty of coral and pearls and shells, but only recently have looked to land for such beauties as precious gemstones, noble metals, and fine fabrics. Silver is, however, of no use to them as it corrodes quickly, but gold and platinum are even more valuable to them than they are to unicorns.
Seaponies are not directly magical, like unicorns, but do have three magical abilities. One is to form bubbles or pockets of air of any size, which they may use, if inclined, to rescue others in need. Their singing is a kind of enchantment in and of itself, which can affect the moods and actions of other creatures, even putting ideas and impulses into their minds. The more seaponies that you have singing together, the stronger the spell becomes, and the much harder to resist until it is very nearly like mind control. Lastly, they are all, more or less, capable of creating waves, water currents, and whirlpools in some degree. Although usually used to aid their movements, it is considered a sport for two skilled seaponies to "duel" each other with this magic until one yeilds.
