It was a cool blue winter morning in Ponyville, and everything was starting to get underway for Hearth's Warming. Lights were being hung over porches, wreaths hung against the doors, wintertime sales advertised in the shop windows... but most importantly of all, the weather team made them snow! They arranged a tough snow the night before, and Pipsqueak had stayed up a little past his bedtime just to look out his window and see it start coming down. And now it was piled up to his knees!
With his stature, that didn't say much—it was ankles to all the grownups—but still!
So, knee-deep in snow and bundled up in his little snow jacket and enormous green scarf, Pip trotted out of his house in the Ponyville marketplace. It was lucky the snow had come today, because that meant his business was sure to do well! His dad knew what he was doing and gave him the okay, so he didn't feel bad about being out of the house alone for a while, even if it was just outside. Besides, it wasn't like he was just going to play around like usual. He was going to try and earn some bits. There were presents to buy, after all!
That was another reason he loved the winter, especially around the holiday. His mum and dad had never, ever missed a Hearth's Warming, even when her work took her very very far away. He wanted to make sure he got them both the best most wonderful presents he possibly could. It would be the first time he ever did and he wanted to make them happy.
But he was still little, and there were only so many ways he could earn bits. So—with his dad's help and permission—he had built a hot chocolate stand outside his dad's bakery, complete with a sign and a seat (that was just a bread crate), lots and lots of paper cups, and three great big thermoses full of his dad's best steaming chocolatey goodness. It was even better than Sugarcube Corner's, to Pip, because it was dad's.
He'd even gone as far as to decorate the stand himself, and it was painted up in lots of white with brown, swirly designs. He trotted down the stairs with the last thermos and plopped down, flipping the little sign on the surface to say Open. Above him, the sign advertised his product: HOT CHOCLAT for the low, low price of 2 BIT.
A cold wind blew past, fluttering his scarf, and he snuggled into it with a cozy smile. (These cold blustery days always reminded him of home.) With it this chilly out, surely anypony out and about would want a nice, warm cuppa... right?
