By all appearances it was an average day in Ponyville, and not in the ironic way implying catastrophe. The sun was out with a few clouds in the sky, and ponies were going around doing their business and enjoying the day. Twilight, on the other hoof, was feeling a bit disheartened. There had been some business of her own she had been putting off for quite some time now. The matter at hoof was right in front of her, and she had to figure out what to do.
Twilight Sparkle stood against a safety railing looking at the crater that had once been the Golden Oaks Library. That had once been her home. Lord Tirek had destroyed it with a blast of magic, and the hole was made worse when her friends had dug up the stump. That stump was a cherished part of her castle now, but the hole was a depressing reminder to the memories she had there. It felt wrong to simply fill it up and pave over it like nothing had happened. Some had suggested a statue to her and her friends, but that also felt wrong. They didn't do the things they had done for glory... with minor exceptions to a couple of incidents with Rainbow Dash, but those were minor incidents.
Something had to be done about it, and it was up to her to decide. It was a daunting task, but she couldn't put it off any longer.
Ahh Ponyville. It'd been a while since Melanite had been in the small town. Even longer since she was awake while the sun was out. She glanced around, her eyes scanning the city from behind her sunglasses as she walked. She remembered the post office, the Cafe, the Boutique, the Libr....
THAT'S WHAT WAS DIFFERENT. She slowly made her way over to the giant hole that used to be a library and looked down into it. She glanced over to Twilight, then back to the hole. Then, smirking up at Twilight, she spoke. "Looks like someone's got a Hole lot of work ahead of them." The look on her face, with her fang-filled smile, screamed 'no, I'm not sorry for that.'
However, after holding the stupid grin for a few moments longer than necessary, she looked back to the hole. "So... You gonna do something with it? Need any help?" Melanite offered.
Twilight gave the bat pony a stern look for her comment. "I used to live in the library that used to be here before Lord Tirek blew it up." she said flatly. The joke was too soon, much too soon. The Princess sighed with a sad expression and looked into the hole again. "Mayor Mare said I could decide what would go here to replace the library, and I've been putting it off. I need to figure something out that feels right."
Melanite recoiled a bit at the angered Princess. Note to self, Friendship Princesses aren't a big fan of poorly timed jokes... Most ponies weren't, actually, now that she thought about it. She cleared her throat and lowered her head slightly. "Sorry. I'm horrible at dealing with emotional issues, so I crack jokes to try to keep a smile on my face. Won't happen again, Ma'am." Melanite said. She mentally kicked herself at saying Ma'am. Things stuck with her from her time in the guard and she HATED that...
She cleared her throat and looked around for a moment, her shades keeping a majority of the light from hitting her eyes as she did. "You know, I don't see another Library in town. Unless you've got one in that Palace that's accessible to the public." She looked back to Twilight. "And even if you did, I know I'd be scared out of my wits to go into the Palace to read a book. Just think of the punishment for an overdue book. 'ONE DAY LATE? ONE DAY IN THE DUNGEON.'" She kicked herself mentally again. Stop with the Library Jokes! "I guess, no matter what you decide to do, you should find a way to fill the hole in, so you can build on it, right?" Melanite tought for a bit. "When I was stationed here, this was a tree... Did Tirek somehow destroy the entire tree? I'm surprised theres no remnant of a stump anywhere to be seen."
Twilight let out a breath and shook her head. "You don't need to call me ma'am. As long as I'm not officially acting as a Princess I'd rather be called Twilight." she said as she neared the bat pony. "Actually, I do. I want to turn the first level of the castle into a place of education. Not a school, but maybe a library and study hall?" Melanite's comment about overdo books and the punishment for them made the Princess giggle, just a little, and roll her eyes. "Nooo. One day isn't so bad. So long as the book isn't in high demand, I think I could pardon one day so long as it didn't become a habit."
"The stump is in my throne room. My friends fixed it to the ceiling and dangled enchanted gemstones from the roots as decorations. Each gem is a memory we've shared. I'm surprised Rarity knew such a spell. Maybe you were right though. I could turn the spot into a place that Ponyville needs."
Melanite nodded as Twilight spoke, giving a sigh of relief. "Believe me, I'd rather call you Twilight than 'Ma'am' or 'Your Highness'... It was just an automatic reaction that was drilled into my brain as part of my guard training. One of those things I wasn't able to get rid of, you know?" Melanite explained and looked about. Ponyville wasn't in /need/ of much of anything. It had all the necessities, didn't it?
"Maybe a Rec Center?" Melanite suggested, looking back to Twilight. "Back in Canterlot, when I would wait for Mom to come get me from Ballet lessons, shutup yes I did Ballet, I would go to the Rec Center. Just a place for the youth to hang out. There was a small lobby with some games, a gym for some sports, and a quiet area for kids to do homework." Melanite said, looking back toward the town. "I don't think I saw one of those in my couple years as a guard. It was a good place for ponies to teach foals some different things, too."
