Mothlings
The Mothling is an off shoot of the Changeling species. While the way they feed and bore children is the same, the Mothling has a few biological differences that are important to note. And there is an important rule.
All Mothlings are Changelings,
But not all Changelings are Mothlings!
Unlike the standard Changeling, the Mothling has a fluffy collar located at the base of their neck, and antennae where a Changelings ear fins would be. To make up for the lack of ears, a mothling has small holes, one on each side of its head that function in a similar fashion. But not all Changelings are Mothlings!
Due to the shape and size of their wings, they require more energy to get into the air, but less energy to stay there, due to an increased capability to glide. When their wings are not in use, they fold back against their sides.
Due to the lack of nostrils, Mothlings cannot smell through their muzzles. Instead their antennae takes up the responsibility. As well as scent, their antennae act as gyroscopes, keeping them upright. If they are damaged, dirty, or messed with through physical contact, the Mothling will have a very difficult time staying balanced. The antennae are also very sensitive to touch.
The fluff around their necks, besides making them look friendly, produces a dust that has two effects. The common Mothling drone’s dust acts as a powerful eye irritant that only works if it comes in contact with the eyes meant to aid in evasion, while a Mothling queens dust works in a similar manner to an aphrodisiac, but only works upon inhalation or ingestion in order to extract love from a target easier. A drone has soft, yet coarse fluff, with a consistency between pony fur and cotton, while a Queen’s fluff has the feeling of silk. Mothlings are immune to both dusts effects, and changelings can only be affected by the Queen’s dust through ingestion.
The Mothling hive mind isn’t compatible with Changeling hive mind. The Mothlings hive mind benefits only the Queen, allowing her to see and hear anything they can as long as they are within range. At any point, she can take control of a drones vocal functions and project her own voice. Because of how their hive mind works, the Queen and her drones do not share thoughts.
Other Quirks:
- Attracted to bright lights for some unexplainable reason.
- Are capable of making honey from pollen, usually mixed with the Queen’s dust to make love extraction easier.
- When carrying young, the Queen’s abdomen is transparent, and the egg clutch is visible.
- Each Mothling is allergic to cinnamon. They are not sure as to why this is, but if exposed to it, the holes in their legs will ooze the material used to form cocoons. This disrupts their disguises.
- A Mothling cocoon matches the color of the Mothling's color accents is as opposed to the standard Changelings green cocoons.
- The colors of a Mothling can vary greatly, but their chitin color will always be the same color as their Queen's unless a mutation occurs.
- Are bad at disguising, usually mixing traits that aren’t meant for the race they are disguised as.
- Physically weaker than the standard changeling.
