At a first glance, one would see a forest. The trees stood tall, and the wind was dead. It was only once a mind settled, that it began to notice differences. The sky was filled with darkened clouds, and a reddish hue had been cast across the horizon. Nothing was as it seemed. The trees twisted and gnarled around a single clearing, leaving no way out.
Among the haunting surroundings, was a single wooden desk, with a blonde mare sitting at it. Her blue and pink mane was laying down, and she idly typed away on a typewriter. Her lips moved, almost like they were whispering a secret, but her eyes were glossed over, and red, as if from crying.
Another scream pierced the droning sound of the keys of the typewriter, but the mare typing continued as if nothing were different. The only other sound was the light plucking of strings on a lyre. There was no origin of the sound; it simply emanated from the very world.
The hero who had entered the dream would feel shackles on his legs, and awake in a pile of papers, each one written in a foreign language. The sky pulsed red.

”Well, if this doesn’t look like the scene of a horror film,” Time Turner replied as he walked through…whatever it was that he was at.
When he had volunteered to help rescue the ponies trapped in sleep, he had hoped to maybe get somepony he knew. Well, he sort of knew Lyra, in that she was a roommate with Bon Bon. That was about the extent of his knowledge. That was going to make finding and helping her a little bit harder, but, well, that never stopped him before. He was going to help this Lyra mare if it was the last thing he…
A scream pierced the dream air, causing Time Turner to jump a little. It did knock him out of his own little dreamy, heroic state, however. This was enough for him to remember to really look around at his surroundings.
”Okay, shackled and on lots of paper with foreign writing. That has to symbolize something…maybe…I don’t know.”
He was tempted to see if he could use his good old Earth Pony strength to break free, but for now he figured might as well keep it on. For all he knew if he broke free he’d be chased down by some monster for trying to escape or whatever. Of course, the monster could be chasing him anyway and not being free would slow him down….
His ears perked up at what sounded like more screaming, a typewriter, and a faint lyre sound. Lyra played the lyre, right? Well, that was probably evidence to wherever Lyra was, which based on the origin sounded…everywhere. ”Well that’s helpful,” he sighed. At least the typewriter sound had an origin, so that was the way he went. Moving in his shackled state, Time Turner took some time to get to it. Seeing the mare at the desk with the typewriter, he headed over.
The blonde mare looked up, and as soon as she did, the music and the clacking of keys died. "Hide." The mare's eyes went misty, but she returned to typing. The music remained dead. "I'm warning you, now. The forest is going to take you. When, the forest takes you, hide. If you don't hide, they'll find you." She paused, and pulled a lantern out of her desk. "You're going to need this... Celestia have mercy on your soul."
The lyre music started back up, and she resumed typing. At this point, Time Turner would notice there was no paper in the typewriter. Her eyes glazed back over, and everything seemed the same as it was, except the new source of light on her desk.

”…okay…”Time Turner responded as he grabbed the lantern into his mouth.
Yep, it definitely seems that Lyra’s dream was going for that horror story feel. Somepony needed to talk with her about eating those spicy foods before bed. Spicy foods gave nightmares right? Meh, whatever. The more interesting question now was to figure out where to go from here. The mare at the typewriter didn’t seem like she was going to be of much use, other than giving out free lanterns. And the lyre sound still didn’t sound like it was coming from any particular direction. So that just left…
Of course, off into the scary forest that I was just warned was going to try and take me….allonsy?
With no other plan, it was off into scary forest land!
As Time Turner approached the forest, it seemed impenetrable. The gnarled roots and twisting branches formed a protective barrier between the dark foliage in front and the simple clearing behind him. Then, a slight wind blew. It was enough to tickle the hairs on his neck. Something else was carried with the wind. It revealed itself as a whisper, like lips only centimeters away from his ear.
"Come out and play."
The trees snapped to life, and forcefully grabbed him. Branches yanked him into the darkness. There was another scream, but this one was right by Time Turner. He was forcefully thrown to the ground, and the trees returned to normal.
It was dark. It was as if the shadows had been brought from Tartarus itself, and were bathed in the blackest oils and wore the darkest robes. They coalesced in every canopy, writhed under every root, and stalked from his surroundings. The only thing that pierced the veil of pure black was the lantern the mare had given Time Turner. It was a pale light that barely illuminated a six foot radius. Currently, it was resting sideways on a stump.
A pair of yellow eyes briefly flashed in the darkness, and disappeared just as quickly. Lips brushed against the fur of Time Turner's ear. "Let's play..."

Before he had time to contemplate random horror movie whispering in his ear, he found himself being grabbed the branches. Well, that explained the typewriter mare’s warning. With all the commotion, he almost missed hearing another scream. And then he found himself smacked into the ground.
”Uuuuugh, dream or not that hurt,” he moaned as he started trying to get up. The lantern had been tossed to the side, being apparently the only source of light he had now.
He had to jump a little bit at the whispering in his ear again, especially since it felt like something was there. He was tempted to try and respond to it with some joking confidence, but his sore dream back was reminding him that might not be the best idea to do.
”Alright, want to play? Let’s play,” he said as he grabbed the lantern again and headed off…whatever direction he wandered off towards.
The forest was dead silent. The same wind that had tickled the back of his neck before was still present. And everything was dark.
Each hoofstep brought him further and further into the shadows. And everything was quiet. Trees loomed overhead. Not a single animal was seen. All there was, was the light from his lantern. And everything was quiet.
Again, the lips brushed by his ear. The wind picked up for a moment, and a cold chill ran down his spine. His lantern flickered.
"Let's play a game..."
Then, the yellow eyes melted out of the veil of black. A pale filly formed around the eyes, and her voice still sounded like it was right by his ear.
"Play a game with me, Mister..."
Her yellow eyes stared at him, emotionless and empty. And everything was quiet. And everything was dark.

It seemed they reached the “walking through a completely still forest” stage of the horror tropes. Hopefully this would actually lead somewhere soon. He was half tempted to see if he could just set the forest on fire; that would provide light and smoke out whatever thing kept whispering in his ear.
Or apparently the ghostly kind of filly was kind enough to just kind of show up on her own. Kind of depressing looking really, but what was he to expect out of a filly-ghost thing from a horror movie in the making? Definitely not a happy filly, that was for sure.
”Alrighty then, what’cha up for playing then? Tag, hide-and-seek, a good game of yahtzee?” he said as he put the lantern down, holding a hoof up to find a cup filled with some dice in it.
How in the world did that get there? Oh,right, dream world; he could control parts of it too. With a shrug he threw the cup away; he really doubted she’d be up for a game of yahtzee.
The filly watched him toss the cup aside. The dice rolled onto the ground, and kept rolling, until they were at the filly's hooves. She picked them up, and looked up at Time Turner.
"Let's play a game."
Suddenly, a large shadowy tendril slammed down onto the filly, and drug her into the darkness. A scream ripped through the silence. His lantern's flickering ceased. And just as quickly as the chaos had erupted, it was gone. It was silent once more.

Time Turner watched with eyes wide open as the young family was smashed and dragged off by another shadow branch thing. He blinked a moment before saying anything.
”So…does this mean I win?”
Does being kidnapped by a forest count as forfeiting the game? He wasn’t that sure, but what he was sure about was that he was getting really tired by the clichéness of this dream and this forest. Also, shadow branches slamming things; that was getting kind of tiring too. Well, there was at least one way to get a little bit more light…
Using the power of his imagination and control over dreams, he pulled a torch of out of his satchel and placed it up to the lantern. Once it was nice and burning, he glanced around a bit and decided to throw it in the direction of the last set of branches. Sure, burning a forest when he was still in it might not be the greatest plan in real life, but he was working in dream logic now.
The torch flew into the darkness, only to be intercepted before it could hit anything. A golden glove shone in the light, and if one traced it back to its owner, they'd find Lyra Heartstrings. "It's not nice to burn down forests, Timey, and it's-Is it okay if I call you Timey? Of course it is! Anyways, you've got something I want." The mint mare put out the torch in her hand, and then tossed it aside. She walked up to Time Turner on her back two hooves, as if it were perfectly natural. "You see, I'm kinda in the market for pony souls. And yours is just a'shining away!" Lyra pulled out a knife, and grinned. She twisted it between her fingers, playfully. "I'll give ya a head start, how about that? I give all of you head starts. Gives the illusion that you might get away." Lyra winked.

Well, so much for the torching everything and running for your dear life plan. Good news that at least brought out Lyra. Bad news was she apparently was the star of this little horror film. It’d be a little more believable if she wasn’t interrupting the scary murderous mare thing with occasional moments of Lyra-ness. And what was with the fingers? Hmm, whatever.
”Hmm…nah, I might as well just stay here then if it’s just an illusion,” he replied, adding to it by just laying on the ground.
”Besides, this is just a dream anyway, and I know the real Lyra wouldn’t actually hurt anypony. So might as well just stick around and chat. Lovely hands by the way, are they new?”
Aw, she liked it when they ran. At the mention of it being a dream, Lyra laughed. "Timey, I think you're a little confused. You see..." The mint mare wandered closer to Time Turner, brandishing the knife. "I am the real Lyra. And I know it's a dream. That's why I have no quarrels in ripping the souls out of these ponies!" Lyra looked at the clawed hands. "And, yes, they are new! I just love having hands." She wondered how Time Turner knew... He must be an intruder. That meant he wasn't like the rest of the dream ponies. "You're not a part of the dream, are you?"

Despite the rather calm demeanor he was giving, Time Turner had to admit his heart was starting to race a little. Dream or not, he wasn’t particularly looking towards getting stabbed. It seemed, however, that for the time being the dream Lyra-he refused to believe it when it said it was the real Lyra-was willing to stay her hands. It also had caught on to him not being a part of the dream; twas about time actually.
”Nope, not part of the dream at all. I’m actually the rescue crew, sent her to get you. Something about a sleeping sickness or spell that’s keeping ponies sleeping, unware they are in a dream. Which, by the way, is part of the reason I doubt you’re the real Lyra; she’s not supposed to know it’s a dream.”
Standing up and Time Turner put on his best bored face as he looked down the serial killer pony in front of him.
”So can we just skip the nonsense and you just tell me where the real Lyra actually is? This whole spooky killer thing is getting kind of boring and I’d like to just get out of here already.”
The Lyra in front of Time Turner's face tightened into a glare. She threw her knife into the ground, and waved him over. "Fine. Come with me. I'll take you to her, but after that, you're fair game. You and her both." The red gems on her gauntlets shone, and the dream Lyra began to lead the stallion deeper into the dark forest surrounding them.
As they walked, things changed rather quickly. The trees began to thin out, and a flicker of torchlight shone ahead of them. The dream Lyra walked on, unaffected even as the grass gave way to a cobbled pathway. Soon, they came upon a jolly scene. There was a large wooden table, one that vikings might have sat at, with mountains of food upon it and ponies sitting in attendance. Each pony laughed and drank and ate to their hearts' content. None seemed affected as another scream came from the forest behind Time Turner and Dream Lyra.
At the end of the table, a mint mare sat back, playing the lyre flawlessly. There was a cream colored mare beside her. If Time Turner remembered, this was the same mare who had given him the lantern when he had first entered the dream. She had the same glassed over look on her face, but it was directed at Lyra. Dream Lyra looked at Time Turner. "I don't think you need any more help. Good luck. You'll need it." She turned around, and walked away from the stallion.
