Fox frowned as she listened to Quill's parents. The fur at the back of her neck rising as she felt her anger growing as she listened before she stepped closer to them. "How dare you, HOW DARE YOU talk to her like that. Threatening to throw her out because you don't like her hobby, her hobby".
Her dander well and truly up, Fox glared at Quill's parents as she found herself somewhere close to lost for words before she thought of something. She knew Quill lived in Ponyville. She had bought some quills from her store before. She stamped a hoof on the floor as she realised what was likely to have happened. "You kicked her out. That's why she lives in Ponyville. You kicked her out because she writes stories. Where would Equestria be without stories".
Frankly feeling a little surprised at how angry she was, Fox forced herself to try and calm down as she coalseced all of anger into three words "You sicken me".
The dream freezes for a moment, as if unsure how to react to the sheer anger being presented to it. It figures it out soon enough however, and apparently decides to ramp it up.
Quill's parents and the room they stand in both seem to grow exponentially, and most of the light disappears. They speak at the same time, over and under each other, with the mother's many whispers weaving through the father's shouting. The clamor is almost impossible to understand, with only a few, cruel phrases breaking through.
Then the room is shrinking, closing in around the three ponies, and the parents grow to fill whatever space is left. Listening carefully, one can almost hear a third voice arguing with the parents, then begging them. Finally, the argument is ended as the stallion shouts.
"ENOUGH! GET OUT!"
A door opens in the clouds beside Fox Fire, leading into a grey nothingness.
As she doorway appeared Fox was glad for it. Her mind was abuzz with concern for her friend mixed with concern about how she had reacted. As a rule she didn't lose her temper very much but something about Quill's parents, combined with the strange dreamscape she was trapped in was fraying her nerves more than she cared to admit.
She was obviously passing through a mix of Quill's writings and bad events from her past and she had no idea where it was going to finish but the thoight occured to her that fluffy bunnies were probably not going to be involved any time before the end.
Realising that her heartbeat seemed back to normal, Fox glanced around before stepping through the portal.
Once again, the stillness of the all-encompassing grey lasts only a moment before the scene changes. Once it fades, the unicorn finds herself on a high mountain with red dirt. There's a single tree to the left, looking healthy despite the dry ground. Below, a wide scene is visible.
To the left, a pair of ponies in different types of armor stand facing each other. Due to distance, it's impossible to tell any details about them besides that one is obviously taller than the other.
To the right, there is a tall, castle-like structure that looks as if it were built from an outcropping of rock. Beside it, there's a tall, brick tower. The gate is barred and guarded by a single pony.
In the back, a river flows gently, curving behind the castle. A pony sits on the riverbank, but they're so distant that any details are impossible to discern.
The edges of, well...everything is covered in a strange fog.
Fox smiled, glad to be out of Quill's bad memories, then pondered her next action. She recognised the castle from the picture in Quill's bedroom so she suspected that it was likely to be where she needed to go. She started strolling towards the pony by the river but kept an eye on the two armoured ponies.
As she walked Fox pondered the idea that anyhting in the area could be something important. Anything could give her a clue as to what to do to save Quill. Despite her feeling that something could go badly she made a be-line towards the two armoured ponies in case they could give her infromation she might need.
As Fox Fire descends the mountain, space seems to warp, making the trip much shorter. Upon her approach, the two ponies stop what they're doing and turn their heads to her. The one on the left is an intimidating mare wearing pegasean armor, leaving her face visible and pushing her green mane through the crest. She wears an angry expression, obviously not pleased to have their meeting interrupted.
It's nearly impossible to determine any details of the other pony, as they wear a suit of clunky-looking, full-body metal armor, including a helm with a visor.
"What do you want?" The mare speaks first, taking a hostile tone towards the teenager.
Fox looked at the mare, really wishng she hadn't gone for the armoured she-devil pony with a sword look. She had a suspicion that idea was about to bite her on the rump. She moved closer to the ponies, wincing as she noticed one thing I thought she was about as big as she was going to get.
Hoping she looked less nervous than she felt Fox ooked the big mare in the eyes and smiled her best try at a cold smile, the major problem being that looking tougher than she was was not her forte. "I'm looking for a pegasus called Quill. Have either of you good ponies seen him".
"We don't know anypony by that name. Now scram! We have important matters to attend to." The mare seems ready to launch into aggression at any sign of a threat. Her companion, however puts out a hoof to keep her back.
"Now now, Thunder." The voice rumbles and echos in the metal suit, and the pony lifts their visor to reveal their eyes, which are a brilliant reddish-purple color. "Let's not get too feisty, hmm?" The mare glares at Fox Fire, then at the other armored pony, but backs off. The pony, who appears to be an earth pony judging by the lack of wing or horn holes in the suit, turns to the young unicorn.
"Now, you say you're looking for somepony by the name of Quill?" They pause, eyes appearing thoughtful. "I'm not sure it's much help, but I believe a fellow passed by earlier who mentioned that name." A metal-covered hoof gestures in the general direction of the pony sitting by the riverbank. "He went thereabouts."
Fox nodded at the Earth Pony with the familiar eyes and smiled. "Thank you kind sir". She looked at the other pony and bowed to both of them before backing off a step. "I will leave you to your business".
She backed away, keeping a wary eye on the angry-sounding mare before turning towards the river. She cantered down to the river and took a drink before looking at the pony, taking the opportunity to take a look at the pony before speaking.
The pony is a stallion, with grey-green fur and dark grey hair. He sits dejectedly, slumped over as he stares at the water. His eyes look empty. The cutie mark on his flank is a pie with the symbol for pi in the center of it. His wings are folded loosely at his side. He doesn't look up as the young unicorn approaches, but after a few moments he speaks.
"There's a war brewing, you know." He pauses, then looks at her and continues. "They could stop it, but they don't. They're just going to let it happen." He looks almost angry, but the expression would be better described as mostly disappointed.
Fox sat down next to the pony and frowned as she pondered this latest bit of information. She was fairly sure that the 'war' that the pony had mentioned was probably part of wht she needed to do to help Quill.
Pushing aside the thought of what one pony could do to stop whatever was going to happen aside since as she had proven with her wardrobe change she could seemingly do impossible things, Fox smiled as she moved closer to the pony and asked "I'm Fox, what can I do to help?".
"Fox?" He says it slowly, tilting his head to the side thoughtfully. "I've heard a name like that before. In a letter, maybe." He pauses, then shakes his head as if to derail a thought. "My name is Pi. I..." He cuts himself off and turns away for a moment, eyes roving the surroundings. His ears twitch and he rubs a hoof through his mane before seemingly coming to a decision.
"I need to find my sister. I don't want her around if there's going to be fighting. Will you...will you help me find her?" He sounds more confident than before, determined. Suddenly more energized, he stands, puffing his chest out. He's taller than most ponies, and many superheroes would be hard-pressed to match such a heroic look as the one upon his face. "I think she's in that castle over there!"
Fox's jaw dropped for a second as she looked at Pi, her higher brain functions momentarily replace by one thought running through her mind, Ohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboy. After a moment she managed to get her over-excited hormones back under control, she shhok her mane and smiled. "I'll help you, I was planning to go there anyway".
Stop thinking like that, there's a job to be done. You can think about that later, really. This is just a side-effect of all the weird things which are happening. She stood up and walked around in front of Pi. "One question, youir sister isn't called Quill, is she?".
The stallion, who had dropped the heroic pose to stand more neutrally, tilts his head to the side curiously. "Why, yes," he says, sounding surprised. "Do you know her?" He pauses, and seems to remember something. "You must be Fox Fire, right? She wrote about you in her last letter." Pi smiles at the unicorn.
"Well, in any case, we should start walking. We should get there as soon as possible." He nods toward the castle and starts walking, expecting Fox Fire to follow behind him.
Fox followed Pi, wondering what exactly was wrong with herself. She was acting like a love-sick teenager (and she hadn't even acted when she was a teenager), hanging on his every word and struggling to keep a stupid grin off her muzzle. I have to remember, he's just a figment of Quill's imagination. There's no likelihood that the real Pi is anything like he is. Keep calm or I could be in big trouble.
Shaking her head to make herself act like somepony other than a love-sick mare Fox looked at Pi. "Is the war anything to do with those two armoured ponies I passed on my way to you".
