Fox followed Rose down the corridor as she dealt with the adrenaline surging through her. She was a little surprised what she had done to the guard, it was not normally in her nature to attack someone physically. The fact that she was in a dream meant that she was able to do things which she couldn't or wouldn't do but it was still odd. She had heard something which a unicorn had done during the Changeling invasion and she had a slight yearning to do it herself before this was finished.
She walked over to Rose and put a (hopefully) reassuring hoof on her shoulder as she looked at Bass. "She'll be okay, if anyone can work out how to help Bass it's Quill". She looked around as the thought occured to her that Quill might be in no condition to help them. "Which way do we go now?".
Rose nods in agreement and, still leading Bass as though she were a child, moves back the way they'd come.
"We're supposed to go back this way and follow the way Quill went, and meet her near the throne room. Then we'll carry out the rest of the plan to overthrow the dictator. A distraction should be in place by now."
They climb up the long stairwell to find a guard stationed at the top who wasn't there before, but Rose neutralizes him quickly by slamming the hilt of her dagger into the back of his skull. She hurries down the hall, though freezes suddenly when she reaches the spot where Quill's confrontation had occurred. In front of her sits a pile of dust, topped by a quiver of bolts. Nearby is the crossbow the teenager had been using.
Fox walked over tot he pile of ash, not completely sure what 'Quill's' death meant. Was she trapped in the same dream that Quill was or not. "Damn it". Feeling anger burning deep inside her she picked up the quiver and the crossbow. Forcing herself to not shout, yell, cry or any of the other feelings running through her Fox turned to Rose. "We're going to need to improvise, the plan's shot as it was. Quill was the one who had an idea of what was going to happen".
Fox paused before speaking again. "There's only one thing I know for sure. I'm going to finish this if it's the last thing I do and Celestia help anyone who gets in my way".
"Well..." Rose mumbles, thinking hard. "She didn't tell us a whole lot about what exactly she was going to do. She told us our parts and that was it. So here's what I think we should do." She paused, reluctant to say the next part. "I think we should scram. Like you said, your friend was the one with the plan to overthrow the dictator and we can't do it without her. So we should run for now and set a plan in motion later to take him down, once we have more help. What do you think?"
She shifted her weight nervously, not sure how Fox would take the suggestion, especially now with her friend gone.
Fox pondered Rose's suggestion for a moment before sighing. "That makes sense. If we can get more people on side we'll stand a better chance of succeeding". She looked down at Bass. "Besides, we might be able to work out a way to help Bass while we're at it. Being able to release the ponies who are under their control would be a big help".
She looked at Rose and smiled as she looked around. "Let's go!".
Rose nods, relieved that her plan was well-received. She takes off down the hall, moving quickly to the door where they entered. However, as Fox moves down the hall, the surroundings turn grey, signalling a dream change.
When the grey fades away, she finds herself standing in a cold, sterile room. The walls, ceiling and everything else in the room are all white, save for a tile pattern of small red diamonds in the floor. There are two empty hospital beds along one wall, and a large window across from them. Outside the window is an unfocused landscape that appears to be approximately the same as what was visible through the window in Quill's bedroom.
There are two doors in the room. One is in the back corner and is closed, while the other is open and leads to a hallway. Fox appears in the room as a filly, though she would only notice it if she were to look down at herself.
Only a few moments into the dream, a nurse enters the room, wheeling a third bed in front of her. She places it between the two that were already there, doing her best not to wake the sleeping filly on it. The filly has grey fur and messy red-grey-blue hair, and wears a cast on her foreleg. She has small wings, one of which is in a splint, a black eye, and several cuts and bruises on her face and body.
Fox looked around, getting used to the changes in surrounding, the looked down at herself. "What the hay?". Bearing in mind that the fact that she was only a filly now was marginally less surprising than it should hav been, she walked quietly over to the bed where the filly, presumably Quill, was lying and frowned.
Guessing and hoping Quill must have been injured in a accident, Fox walked around the third bed and over to the nurse. Remembering how small she was, Fox smiled before asking. "What happened to her?". She looked around, looking for Rose.
Rose Harmony is nowhere to be found in the room, and in fact the nurse is the only other pony there. She smiles condescendingly at Fox.
"Your friend will be just fine, little filly. Don't worry, we fixed her right up!" And with that, she leaves the room, even though she never really answered the little unicorn's question. After she closes the door, the foal on the bed begins to stir, blinking open her bleary eyes.
"Wh..." She has to stop and work her jaw for a moment before she can continue. "Where am I?"
Fox walked over to the filly's bed and put her hooves on the foot of the bed so that she could see the filly better. It wa obvious from the injuries that either Quill had crashed somewhat badly while flying, which explained her ibjuries or something entirely darker had happened to her.
Fox smiled to try and reassure her before speaking. "You're in hospital. It looks like you were hurt pretty bad. Do you remember what happened to you?".
Quill blinks at the other filly groggily, but the confusion begins to clear up. After a moment she nods, seeming to remember.
"I fell," she says a little unnecessarily. "I was trying to fly the way my brother does, but I fell." She sounds a little disappointed that she hadn't been able to be like her brother. She's silent for a minute as she inspects the cast on her leg, touching it gingerly with the other hoof. Then she looks back to Fox curiously.
Fox smiled to hide her momentary confusion as she considered that this Quill was too young to remember her. "I'm Fox. I saw when you were being brought in here and I thought you might need some moral support. The rest of my family are all oohing and ahing over my baby brother". She frowned. "Like I need another brother".
She smiled as she realised she was never so relentlessly perky when she was the age she looked now. "Do you want some company?. I'm guessing your family will be here soon but I can stay til then".
The filly seems to accept the explanation, and smiles shyly at Fox. "H-hello, Fox. Thank you." She pauses, then looks around the room until her gaze lands on the window. Quill frowns at it, realizing that it seems to be late morning.
"My family...? I don't know if they'll come until evening." Her frown deepens. "I don't know if they know I'm here..." Her eyes widen and she begins to tear up. "What if they never find out? What if I have to stay here forever? What if they forget about me?" She sniffles, lower lip trembling.
Fox smiled and, cursing her short legs, clambered onto the bed next to Quill's before sitting on the edge of it facing her. Rather precariously, she reached across and put a hoof on the shoulder without the cast on the foreleg. "Don't cry. I'll get someone to check if your parents know about you. They'll come and see you soon. If all else fails I'll get my older brother to get them. He's a pegasus so he can go and get them".
There was something about the flashes she was getting of Quill's fillyhood which was making Fox less the anamored of her parents
The grey filly sniffles again, but seems placated. She gives Fox a grateful look. "Really? You could do that?" She shifts, focusing more on Fox now.
"What's your brother like? Is he nice? Does he take you flying? Mine does that sometimes. It's so much fun!" Excitement begins to overtake her and she leans forward. "Sometimes he takes me reeeeaaally high up! And then he dives and it's like WHOOSH! But he always pulls up right before we hit the ground! Is your brother cool like that?"
Fox smiled as she remembered a slightly unfortunate moment from her past. "I once tried to fly with Diamond, it didn't go well". She giggled, doing motions like she was flying on her brothers back. "He took me up on his back and we discovered that I was a little, well a liot air sick". Trying to keep a straight face, Fox made ballistic vomiting motions. "It took days to clean up some of the the roofs in downrown Ponyville".
She smiled. "He tends to leave me be after my sister Misty was born, she's a pegasus too but she's not got the hang of flying yet, or sharp corners come to think of it so she tends to just run around a lot".
Fox leaned over and smiled. "I'm guessing you tried the whole pulling up at the last second bit and it went awry. Diamond doesn't like it when I mention how he nearly demolished himself and a barn while trying to do that".
