Concept of species I presented previously in the Cbox. Change at will and present your ideas too, of course! XD
The Alchemy Foxes, "Renkintsune"
Unknown to most of Equestria, Renkintsune, popularly known as Alchemy Foxes or Witch Foxes, have the habit of living a lone life, avoiding social contact, studying the nature around them and learning with them, relying on the magic and alchemy arts that is inherited by them at early age. Recently they developed interest in living a more social life, using minor illusionary spells paired with their physique to blend with various societies and learn more about their culture to adapt to their own.
Physiology - In body structure, they are like overgrown foxes, growing no more than the size of an adult pony (with exceptions being for half-breeds, which will be detailed later on), possessing paws similar to that of a raccoon which provides them with dexterity to handle objects with ease and such ability becomes vital in their life style. In addition to all the average traits of a fox, their eyes seem to react to most types of magic, allowing detection of another Renkinstune or helping in detection of magical fields (such as most defensive spells and minor illusionary spells).
There is a variety of colors for them, most being very unusual and exotic, such as neon-green paws with mostly purple body. Rumors are that said color is a reaction to ingredients they or their mother use in the practice of alchemy and magic. The eye color however are always natural, so don't expect some odd eye color unless they are blind and using glass eyes.
As far as they diet goes, they are omnivorous, having a thing for rodents, fowls and birds. But of course, thanks to their nature, they also rely on vegetables and fruits, specially watermelon, orange and berries. As far as their cooking skill goes, they could work in an average restaurant's kitchen and no one would ever know they are behind the stove, since cooking is quite too similar to alchemy for them and they find JOY in doing so.
Thanks to several generations' studies in improving their quality of life, they managed to push their life span to almost 90% of a pony's life span. Even so, there are several cases of lonely ones dying considerably earlier.
Reproduction - Unlike yer average foxes, they lack mating seasons and they just get in the mood when they want. This seems to be an adaptation they developed to avoid unnecessary interruptions in their studies. However, should a pregnancy happen, the gestation period happens to take a little over 60 days, and the birth labor that follows often has complications for both mother and their litter. Even so, one vixen can bear between one and four kits in one litter. Even in gestation period the vixen continues to practice alchemy and magic despite the risks.
They are highly compatible (genetically speaking) with Diamond Dogs. There's a very small chance of failure in breeding and the gestation only presents a slightly higher risk for the mother alone. The outcome of the breeding tends to be a Diamond Dog with fox-like traits, and rarely may result in a Renkintsune or half-breed. A half-breed between these two is often a Renkintsune with bulky build and less magical affinity (most of the times, none), most cases having fertility and health complications.
Culture - Thanks to their loneliness, it's hard to know for sure how their culture works. However some individuals have been interviewed by scholars of Canterlot and Crystal Empire, revealing some interesting facts about Renkintsune:
1. They don't have a religion belief. They only believe in studying and the forces of nature.
2. The knowledge on how to construct proper housing and generally living on their own is something the parents pass onto their young before sending them out.
3. By the moment the young ones are sent away from their parents they would be about to reach their early teens.
4. The only time they don't live alone is when they find a mate or they have to house someone who constantly depends on their techniques.
5. Their origins have been traced back to Neighpon, but they now live pretty much anywhere in Equestrian grounds. Reports confirms they are particularly interested in Crystal Empire.
6. An ideal place to build a house/cabin/lodge is almost always at the base of a mountain or within a peaceful forest. "Evil" forests and cursed places are meant to be avoided.
7. Apparently, they are fast learners. The one interviewed was able to disassemble and assemble a radio without any sort of assistance other than a screwdriver.
8. Despite the Neighponese origins, they have pretty average or simple names, such as Roaring Willow or Herbaliscus.
They also display different attitudes to a variety of regions and races (They are just claims by the one interviewed. Yet to confirm.):
- Equestria - No issues, minor interest in The Princesses, major interest in technology. Usually their relationship with Equestrians seems friendly but they still refuse to show their true form in public.
- Saddle Arabia - Involvement in medical advancements and displays considerably less shyness than usual. Sometimes, they don't get shy at all! Their "lone wolf" attitude also seems diminished, as they are often housing up to five guests.
- Crystal Empire - Major interest in crystals found there. They can replicate some of the light-bending properties of the crystal with their illusions, but is still too hard to keep it up. Rumors says one of them actively studies the Crystal Heart to see if it is possible to replicate it.
- Neighpon - Where they supposedly come from. The individual interviewed displays no knowledge of the status in relation to that region.
- Diamond Dogs - Usually provides them with some gems in exchange for some extra services. Hey, gems are handy for alchemy too! Their relationship are pretty good, as some of them have already been living with each other.
- Dragons - Partners in deals. Sometimes Renkintsune vow themselves to serve a dragon, knowing well how to use the materials provided by them. Strongest bond between them was a "father-son" bond.
- Changelings - They don't mind if Changelings feeds on them or not. Helps ease the loneliness for those who crave to be more social. They are all willing to love a changeling if that makes the two of them feel better.
- Others - Neutral relationship. Usually peaceful.
Magic and Alchemy - Their magical affinity is on par with that of an unicorn and can be improved through training. During magical practice, their eyes "leak" some sort of magic aura similar to that seen on Sombra, but the color matches the eye of the fox. The tail seems to act similar to an unicorn's horn, producing a colored (same color as the eyes) magical flame when casting spells. In case of Heterochromia of the eye, the color of the aura and flame will be that of the resulting mix. The most common spells among them are:
- Personal Field Illusion - Basically, a simple disguise. Allows them to look like an average pony or gryphon if needed be, even including features such as wings. However wings or horn won't be functional nor solid. Due to these "failures", they often stick to wingless and hornless forms. It's easy to detect and can be disrupted with an average magic disruption field.
- Telekinesis - They can levitate anything half their weight easily, but anything above the "half of their weight" limit ends up requiring all the focus they can give (forcing them to remain motionless) and draining their strength proportionally to the weight lifted. However those with greater magical affinity and a LOT of practice can lift anything up to their own weight with no problem.
- Soul Flame - Either by exhaling a fireball or by creating it on the tip of their tail, those flames can be directed and used to light up materials or simply heat up the food. It is very hard to keep it under control if it happens to spread, so they use it carefully.
- Transmutation - With the aid of magic they can quickly make simple conversions or shape materials without using the traditional alchemy process. This is commonly used to make paper and ink for recording purposes of their findings.
- Magnification Spell - Their improvisation for a magnifying glass. It's a magic bubble that acts as lenses, so they can get a better view at things. It's easier to only work with one of those, as more than one would be quite hard to shape and move.
Their alchemy skills requires tools and have to follow the rule that "nothing can be created nor destroyed, only transformed", thus they can't create the Philosopher's Stone, nor turn Coal into Gold. However they can quickly work on antidotes for poisons and medicines with ease, relying on inherited knowledge, and often book their knowledge wherever they can: Books, scrolls, stacks of paper...
