Soarin' kept his smile up as he saw the effect he had on Dewdrop. The old charm was just as sharp as ever. Hopefully that'd help both of them get through this date a lot more quickly and smoothly. Dewdrop wanted to break the ice further by getting into the 'tell me about yourself' stage of the date. He wasn't a fan of this stage for...a number of reasons.
"Uhh...what's to say?" Soarin' asked. "If you're looking for a deep, complex pony that you gotta analyze to understand, you've come to the wrong place. With all due respect...to myself, I'm pretty shallow. I like food, flying, a challenge and pretty mares. I travel a lot? Mostly because of Wonderbolt tours and stuff? Umm..."
Soarin' rubbed the back of his head. The Wonderbolt was kind of at a loss for words.
"I'm kind of bad at talking about myself. Unless it's bragging and usually other ponies take care of that for me. Not that you'd want to hear me go on about how awesome I am. That'd be a boring date."
"I AM pretty awesome, though.." he thought to himself as he waited Dewdrop's response.
"Ohhhh no, you're not getting off that easy!" teased Dewdrop Dazzle, leaning forward and cupping her chin in a hoof. "I don't need a complex and in-depth psychoanalysis, and I doubt it would help me if I did have one... I wouldn't understand it." the mare giggled. She was surprised at how bold she suddenly felt. "But you can't leave all the conversation to my end, and then laugh at how inexperienced I am! That's hardly fair!" Though she have a good-natured grin on her face, there was was a note of sincerity in her tone.
"I wouldn't say that you're shallow, either. Shallow ponies don't have the introspection to realize they have no depth. So, supposing even if you're ...a stallion of simple tastes, there's still plenty to talk about. No excuses! So you like pretty mares! We'll talk about that!" The unicorn had a mischievous gleam in her violet eyes as she picked up the most embarrassing topic possible. "What kind of physical attributes do you think are the most appealing? Do you like tall mares? Small mares? Long or short Manes? Do you have a favorite species? And where do I rank on the prettiness scale?"
That was his reward for shrugging off his responsibility to the conversation!
Soarin' seemed startled as Dewdrop made her objection. He certainly wasn't expecting that, nor was he expecting her to so suddenly shift control of the conversation. Maybe this girl wasn't as much of an amateur as he thought. Surprise aside, Soarin' was certainly able to appreciate her compliment as she switched subjects.
When the topic of his preference came up, Soarin' caught a gleam in Dewdrop's eye. She THOUGHT she was gonna be able to get him with this one. It was an effective technique against the uninitiated. But, Soarin' was VERY initiated. The Wonderbolt locked eyes with Dewdrop.
"What kind of mares do I like, Dewdrop?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "All. I like short mares and tall mares. I like mares with legs for days and mares whose eyes I can get lost in. I like mares with short manes, long manes, curly manes, messy manes, poofy manes, simple manes and stylish manes. I like mares that dress to the nines and mares that wear the same thing daily. I like skinny mares, mares with curves and athletic mares. I like mares that are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet and every hue in between. I like mares from the north, south, east and west. I like unicorns, pegasi, bat ponies, earth ponies, crystal ponies and zebras. I particularly like the three alicorns I've met, but one of them's spoke for currently, so lets just leave her off the table. I like sisters, daughters, aunts and mothers. I like mares I can describe as any of the following: cute, sexy, pretty, hot, gorgeous, beautiful, fetching, appealing, glamorous, stunning, fair, ravishing and/or foxy."
Soarin' paused to let what he said sink in...and to catch his breath.
"Put simply, Dewdrop: I doubt there is a pony alive who appreciates the female form as much as I do," he said, still keeping eyes locked with Dewdrop. "But what I always keep in mind is that the prettiest mare and the kind of mare I like best is ALWAYS the one I'm looking at. Because when you're talking to a mare, all the other ones you've met and all the other ones in the world don't matter as much as the one right in front of you. So, right now, I'd have to say my ideal mare is a unicorn with aqua hair, a long mane that reminds me of fruity ice cream, bright violet eyes and who fills out a little black dress juuuust right.
Eyes still locked on Dewdrop's, Soarin' smiled with his own slight mischievous glint in his expression.
"How bout you? What kind of stallions are you into?"
Dewdrop was a little startled by such a blunt and honest answer, and her expression showed her amaze... and a little dismay. Not because it was blunt and honest, but because of the content. From the sound of things, Soarin' liked mares. All mares. Period. And he'd said that whichever mare he was looking at was the prettiest mare at the moment. There was something beautiful in that thought, that when his attention was on you, you were like the center of the universe to him...
...As long as you didn't consider the fact that when his attention wasn't on you, somepony else was in your place. And you might as well be dust underfoot. He hadn't really said that, of course. But how hard it must be to always keep his attention!
"How bout you? What kind of stallions are you into?" He asked.
"Stallions with a little more constancy than that," Dewdrop replied, without thinking, and then laughed good-naturedly. "I have no experience," the unicorn admitted cheerfully, "So I can't be sure. I think I like stallions who are honest and loyal, with a sense of humor. Intelligent, challenging. Dark maned. Intense eyed. I want them to be able to surprise me. I want them to be brave enough to tease me, and wise enough to know when to stop. I want them to be forceful enough in their personality that discussions on what we're going to do don't always turn into them doing what I want to do. And if they could take charge of our conversation sometimes, that would be appreciated too."
The unicorn stopped, a little out of breath, and blushed suddenly. "Of course, I wouldn't expect any pony to have all of these traits, or even most of them. And you know, what we think we want, and the things that actually make us happy- aren't always the same. Just like with food; maybe you do need to try everything to find out what you like and what you don't like." Dewdrop had the sudden, slightly uncomfortable mental image of a buffet table with stallions lined up on it instead of food. She nervously reached for her glass of wine and took a long drink, before nearly choking on the unfamiliar taste of it!
Soarin's cocky demeanor was a bit broken up by Dewdrop's preference for "constancy". He hadn't really considered that when he'd rattled off his list of preferred mare types. At the very least, he knew that was just because he was being honest with her. That made her whole response feel better to him. There were no presumptions or agendas here. Just two strangers being sincere. That was the real upside of a blind date, he was beginning to realize.
The Wonderbolt listened to Dew, happy to hear her be as descriptive as he was in her "type".
"You're probably right," he said, suppressing a smile as Dewdrop nearly choked on the taste of wine. "From experience, I can tell you that you're right. It takes a while to really figure out what your type is. I mean, my experience led me to realize my 'type' is 'all', but you know, I'm a weird case like that."
Soarin' shrugged before taking his own drink of wine. As he suspected, he'd picked a good year.
The unicorn took a second, more cautious sip of her wine, and found it went down much better than the first. All right. So. As long as you didn't try to drink it down like a glass of water or a milkshake, You could get used to this. Looking up, Dewdrop thought she saw the flicker of amusement in Soarin's casual, easygoing smile. A slightly too controlled smile. He wanted to laugh. She could tell. Amusement danced in her eyes and she had a bit of a struggle not to giggle, lest her second sip of wine go as badly as the first.
"So.. without trying to get into your psyche or anything... Is it reasonable for me to suppose you're not looking for that legendary 'The One' that novels and stories and just about everyone always talks about?" The unicorn asked, a little shyly. She knew her experience and ideas about love were at least slightly askew, being built up from novels and books rather than working experience, but... this was a completely new idea to her.
"Dating just for fun? With no ulterior motive?" she wondered aloud. "I mean..." and here she turned a bright shade of red from shoulder to hairline, "I mean, dating should be fun, and if it isn't, then you're definitely with the wrong kind of pony... Unless you like that kind of thing... but then wouldn't that be fun for you...? Anyway! Even though I know it was super-unlikely and I don't want to give you the wrong idea that I made all these plans for the future, I didn't but... I assumed there would be a chance that you might be that One True Love. The search for a "One" is the whole point of dating... isn't it?" she trailed off, uncertainly.
"More than just 'reasonable'," Soarin' said. "It's true."
The Wonderbolt paused for a moment to collect his thoughts and get them into words. Love and dating were complicated things, to say the least. He needed to put this...as eloquently as he could manage it.
"I, uh...I dunno if I believe in love in first sight, y'know?" he said. "I know we all like to believe in it just because of how romantic it sounds, but I'm not convinced. Like, I believe in attraction of course. I mean, duh, that's not really debatable! But, falling in love with a pony the minute you see them? That's a bit silly, even for me. You don't know at all who they are, just that they're pretty. That's not 'love'."
Soarin' took another swig of wine to clear his throat. And his head so he could get to his second point.
"If ya wanna fall in love with someone," Soarin' said, sounding uncharacteristically serious, if only for a moment. "If you wanna find 'The One,' you gotta get to know 'em. And that's why I date for fun. You go on a date, you have fun, BAM, you're friends. And from there, you can decide how far you wanna take it."
It all made enough sense to Soarin' in his own head. But he figured a lot of things made sense there and nowhere else.
"That, uh...that was more rambly as I thought it was gonna be..." he said, a bit bashful.
Soarin' had probably noticed it at some point in their date, but Dewdrop Dazzle was a unicorn. And like many unicorns, she had a love of debate and discussion. Sometimes, The topic hardly mattered at all, as long as there were two conflicting opinions, diametrically opposed to each other. "Don't worry, I think it's interesting!" she assured Soarin' She finished off her glass of wine.
"I think I agree with you about love at first sight..." She continued, in a confidential tone, "It seems like... well, like something that kind of happens retroactively. Supposing we...-and I'm honestly not trying to suggest anything here, this is just for the sake of an example...supposing we hit it off tonight, see each other for a while, and then decide to get married. You might then look back at this moment and go 'Oh, well, of course! I knew it all along! I loved her from the moment I saw her.' And maybe to you then, it will seem completely true. At least, no one's going to argue with you about it, especially not me!" she added, with a grin.
Dewdrop gazed into the tank of fish beside them and watched a little hermit crab scuttle across the pebble-strewn floor "However~" she said, after a moment, the word heavy with amusement and playfulness. She looked back at Soarin' "How do you know your method for finding 'the one' works? Since you're here, it seems like a reasonable assumption that it hasn't worked yet, right?" Despite the challenging sound of the words, the unicorn's tone was playful. She didn't really mean any harm. She was just enjoying the debate.
