It was dark and rainy, with that clammy-cold that seeped into your bones and seemed to take hours to thaw out of your system. Starberry picked her way through a mixture of mud and slush with patience. She had no place to go, and she had all night to get there. Her cloak and hood were deep and, for the most part warm, although the wool was damp and getting wetter every minute. She wouldn't have minded it much at all, if not for the added weight. Starberry stood still a minute, feeling. The world had gone swimmy for just a moment, was it hunger that had done it, or... the other thing? No, she felt all right. Just hungry. And tired. I don't know why I came to the marketplace anyway, there's no one selling anything right now, anyway. But she did know, even though she didn't want to voice the thought to herself. The idea was rather humiliating. She was hoping to find some discarded produce. Maybe some carrots that had lost their freshness, or some wilted lettuce. Apples with bruises. Tomatoes that had gotten a little squished? She didn't want to be a beggar, but it felt like nothing grew at this time of year! She gravitated towards the produce stands. Not tonight. Either everything had sold, or the trash had been collected. Oh well. Well then, she'd better find a place to get out of this wet. Starberry picked a quieter end of the marketplace and found a house with wide, generous eaves under its thatch roof. She walked on up the wall, leaving mysterious muddy hoofprints in her wake, and once she was upside-down, pulled the drawstring sewn into the hem of her cloak. The edges pulled in neatly, and she pulled it up around her feet before tying it off. The effect was rather one of a large grey-green pod, with a pair of huge blue eyes peeking out. |
