Spitfire flapped hard once, lifting off the cloud and gliding over to another one nearby, a table with some bottles of water. She grabbed one and threw it to Gilda, cracking one open herself and taking a long drink. "As far as I can tell, your flying is pretty good. Strong, but that's to be expected from a Griffon." She said, taking a seat on the cloud and looking to Gilda.
"Hey, you may just get it someday. Depends on how well you do when you wear your blue and yellow." Spitfire said, without even a hint of kidding. It was true, she'd choose who she thought would fit the role best. Spitfire smirked a little as Gilda mentioned her training. "Fleetfoot is a good Wonderbolt. But, being a captain goes beyond your flying ability. Fleet is faster than me. Chill is more daring. Streak can fly for longer than me. The captains job is to know the ins and outs of all their 'bolts, and use them to form a strong team. Not just the ability to fly fast or preform flashy tricks."
Spitfire patted the cloud next to her as she finished that little spiel, signalling Gilda to take a seat. "It also takes plenty of humility and friendliness." She said, her voice almost sounding dour. She looked to Gilda and took a breath. "Tell me what happened in Ponyville. I've heard plenty of ponies recollections of it, but I want to hear it from your side."
Gilda supposed that was an alright answer. It wasn't anything special, she wouldn't be able to go brag to Rainbow Dash about it. It recognized her as a good flier though... At least she thought it did, what if she was just trying to be nice? Of course, she wasn't exactly known for niceness but still. It was a possibility. She hoped she was making a good impression, had Fleet talked her? Did the OTHER Wonderbolts know about her?!
Wait...what had she been saying? It had been something about how she'll get her uniform someday? Yep. That was definitely it. THAT she could brag about.
Of course, the mention of humility, of friendliness. She supposed she WOULD have to developed that at some point, Fleet seemed pretty keen on teaching her that lesson too, not to mention it might actually be something she might enjoy! Having a few friends would be pretty nice, someone to hang with instead of waiting for her next training sessions with Fleet by...
Gilda froze. Her pupils shrank to slits as her eyes widened. She looked physically assaulted by the pony's words. To be fair, in a way she had been. Her heart was now beating MUCH faster and her breathing was a little bit shallow. "Y-you know about that? Does Fleet know about that?! I-...who told you?!" Gilda said, she was a little angry, but mostly exasperated. She had tried her hardest to shove that moment into a dark crevasse and it had been brought back so suddenly.
She took a deep gulp of air before deciding to answer the mare's question and quickly. "My friend, my only friend, I thought I was losing her, I got angry...then I thought she set me up, everyone was laughing at me, I didn't know who they were, just that they thought I was an idiot...and I snapped. That's all." she said, her voice cracking near the end. She sat silent, eyes averted. This wasn't such a great meeting after all.
Spitfires face remained calm despite Gilda having a slightly angry reaction, and her voice raising a bit. She calmly waited for Gilda to finish her story before taking a drink of her water, looking down off the edge of the cloud to the ground waaaaay below. After a few minutes of thought, she nodded, looking back to Gilda.
"I read the news from all of the cities we go to frequently. Your outburst made the front page. Likely because the entire town was there." She said calmly. "It said you were brash and overly sensitive to a couple of jokes. But I thought it was only fair to hear your side of the story before passing judgement." She said, taking a deep breath as if she was getting ready to lay a verbal smackdown on Gilda.
However, she placed a gentle hoof on Gildas shoulder. "It all sounded like a big misunderstanding." She started, stretching her back until a pop was heard. Settling back into a comfortable position, she pushed a bit of cloud around with a hoof. "You thought you were losing a friend, so that fear clouded what was going on. Ponies get pranked, ponies laugh, ponies continue about their day." She said with a smile. "Heck, you don't know how many times I've had Itching Powder sprinkled in my suit."
She pushed the piece of cloud over to Gilda, watching as it floated lazily to the Griffon. "I don't blame you for being upset. From what I heard, when you got mad, someone was mad at you for getting mad. That's not sporting. If a Prank makes someone angry, you should probably apologize..." Spitfire said with a nod. "Did you tell Dash you thought you were losing her as a friend?"
Gilda's confidence was in the process of falling, collapsing, hitting the ground after being shattered. She was normally well guarded but this subject was one that undermined her entire identity and the fact that she cared so much multiplied that feeling to levels she could barely stand. It was such a silly and simple thing to be so distraught over. She wasn't tough at all, she was the same griffon that let herself get trampled over as a cub. How could a griffon like that be the future captain?!
She heard Spitfire's breath. It held disappointment, disgust. How the next few moments would go played in Gilda's mind. She could feel her dreams outracing her for the last time. She could see Spitfire laying down insults with spiteful laughter barely concealed. She could see herself yelling back...or wanting to. But she wouldn't be able to. Even she could be broken by losing her dream.
Thankfully, that wasn't what happened. Gilda practically flinched away from the contact, not being used to reassuring touches. She...understood? Tears threatened to make it past Gilda's eyes, but she held them back with practiced discipline. No way was she crying in front of Spitfire. "I did...eventually, like a year later...we're kinda friends again now. She wants me to go to Ponyville though, and I'm never, ever going back into that town." she said. The town's name: Ponyville, left her mouth like it was a dirty word that tasted like rotten meat.
There were more a important thing to do than talk about the city that was simultaneously the causation and realization of so many of her insecurities though, something that was rare for Gilda. "Thanks for listening...and understanding." Gilda said unsteadily. Gilda's friends could be counted on her talons, maybe one of her talons. This mare was now among that number and would be for some time...or at least until they met again, in the academy. If stories held up she would probably hate Spitfire during the academy. She was counting on it. But that was in the future.
Spitfire pulled her hoof away, sensing Gildas hesitation to allow the reassuring hoof. It was alright, she thought. Gilda’s been through plenty, and the two had just recently met. Spitfire went for a reassuring smile instead. ”I wouldn’t cast Ponyville out of your thoughts too quickly. There are a lot of strong flyers there, and the Wonderbolts do shows there from time to time. If you never go back, you can’t perform there when you’re one of us.” She said with a definitive nod.
”Ponies make mistakes. It’s what makes them real. I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my lifetime, too. But what keeps ponies going Is the ability to forgive.” She said, her face turning from the reassuring smile to the serious captain face. ”Without forgiveness, you’ll just keep building more and more barriers and end up becoming a recluse. I don’t want to see that happen. You /can/ be brash, from what I understand. But more than that, you’re CONFIDENT. It’s a confidence that’ll only get diminished by your lack of forgiveness. Have Confidence that you can go back. Have Confidence they’ll accept you back.”
Spitfire pulled the goggles from her head and looked at them for a few moments. She stood, turning to Gilda and put the Goggles on the griffon gently, making sure not to pull any feathers. That way, if the Griffon needed to shed a few tears, they’d be hidden by her new goggles. Her mind flashed through the scene when she was a Filly, meeting Jetstream, Jetstream giving her the Goggles, and then Jetstream passing the Captain title to her some years later.. ”And most importantly, have Confidence in yourself, and all you can do. Confidence Physically, mentally, and emotionally. All three are what you’ll need to become a Captain.” Spitfire said, giving Gilda a wink before making her way over to a set of lockers not too far away to get another pair of goggles out. ”So, you ready to get back to flying?”
It quickly became evident that Spitfire was a leader for a reason. The leader for a reason. Her words carried inspiration and motivation through the air like an infection. She supposed...she would be giving Ponyville a visit, one last chance. If something went wrong she'd definitely be out of there until she was a Wonderbolt though. THAT would show those ponies who was boss. But until then a short visit, thanks to the wise words of Spitfire, would be in order. She wouldn't tell anyone. She would just go for an hour or two, then leave. It would be quick, easy, and she might even surprise one of those ponies that were at the party. She still wasn't keen on the idea though
Her line of thought, and thus her list of potential bad endings while in Ponyville, was ended. Time seemed to slow down as Spitfire lowered the goggles onto Gilda's head and over her eyes. Giving someone your goggles was a huge mark of confidence and respect, certainly not expected from someone just met and definitely not the captain! Gilda took a deep breath to calm herself and resist the overwhelming urge to hug Spitfire. She didn't want to ruin such a great moment by geeking out. "Yeah, back to flying." she said calmly, though her eyes were misty. She was thankful they were hidden now.
"So, what were you thinking?" she said, stretching out her wings and legs in a looooong stretch back. She reached her talons forwards and leaaaaaannned down until her chest was against the ground. "Just some practice, or do we have something to do, need to go anywhere?"
