There should have been little surprise that soon after getting her wings, no matter how temporary, Trixie had made the effort to get in contact with Twilight. Wanting to make sure of course that it was an adequate enough surprise, she made sure to be quite vague in her letter. Just a message about “wanting to show her something”. She also made sure to hide her wings underneath her cape. She left her hat at home, however. It was kind of a pain to deal with during a day out, and despite the wanting to show off her new wings she still did kind of want to hang out with Twilight. Showing off was just going to be a bit of a bonus.
Of course, this was day two of her three days with the wings. Her first day had been spent mailing Twilight and getting used to them so she could actually use them somewhat. Flight was…well, that wasn’t under her current definition of “using them”, but she could at least do the open/close basics of them. They were a surprising pain to sleep with if you couldn’t control them just right. Even know she could feel them twitching just a little bit, not exactly liking being kept under her cape. No wonder pegasi usually got wing holes in their clothing…
”Well, they won’t be hidden for long,” Trixie said with a smile to herself as she looked at the train station’s clock.
She had informed Twilight she would be glad to pick Twilight up, and so she had made her way to the Canterlot train station and was currently awaiting her guest on the platform. This was going to be a fun time….
Twilight had been surprised to receive a letter from Trixie. It wasn't a bad surprise, just an unexpected one. Though being unexpected is part of being a surprise. The letter hadn't been too revealing on what she wanted. There was a mysterious something she wanted to show her, and she was offering to meet her at the train station. She had sent her reply via magic to respond in the affirmative. She'd love to go to Canterlot to visit and see this something.
The train ride from Ponyville to Canterlot was a short one. Much of the time was spent by Twilight looking through her light blue saddle bags to make sure she had everything for the tenth time. She had reasoned two things had happened. Trixie had made some breakthrough and wanted to show it off. Twilight would do something like this if she had something she was super proud of accomplishing. The second thing that came to mind was Trixie had broken something in the castle, and wanted her help in fixing things before someone find out. Twilight thought for a moment going over he mental checklist.... breaking something was unfair and too narrow. A spell could have gone wrong, or an item could have gone missing.
Was Trixie the giddy filly type bursting with energy and waiting on the platform for her practically bouncing in place with excitement, or would she be asking for help shortly after they left the station together? Twilight hoped for the best, but had planned for the worst. Studious little filly Twilight had, at one point, broken a vase while practicing magic alone when she wasn't supposed to. Things had turned out alright, but at the time she had been wishing Cadence would show up soon so she could get help fixing things.
Twilight's body swayed a little as the train came to its final stop at the Canterlot station. The student of Celestia gathered her things and carefully made her way to the doors being mindful of others. The familiar mountain air hit her as soon as she stepped off the train. She lived in Ponyville, but Canterlot was where she was born and grew up. The mare quickly found the magician and started for her. "Hi Trixie! I'm here. What's so important to show me that you couldn't put it in the letter?"

Trixie’s eyes scanned the platform as the train pulled into the station and the crowds began to leave. It didn’t take long for her to spot the familiar purple unicorn walking towards her. Being the polite mare that she was, Trixie gave her a wave. She would have given a hug, but there was a risk that such a thing would clue Twilight into ‘the surprise’ earlier than Trixie wanted. Didn’t stop Trixie from having a mischievous grin on her face. It was taking quite a bit of willpower to stop her wings from ruffling from the excitement.
”Hey now, is that anyway to greet a friend?” Trixie said as she started to lead Twilight out of the station,”Not a ‘how are you’ or ‘good to see’? Just wanting to get straight to business? I’m almost hurt.”
The slight giggle she gave was rather mismatched with the small ‘pout’ she gave Twilight. It was just gentle teasing after all. As they started out of the station, Trixie headed down one of the less crowded roads. She wanted some space after all. That, and minimal crowds bothering them. Plus, it was a road towards a shopping area, and she did want to make this an actual visit with Twilight.
”Anyway, I just wanted to show you some…interesting results of a spell Luna and I worked on the other night.”
Okay, ‘worked on’ was a little stretch. It was more ‘gently prodded Luna till she gave in to Trixie’s adorableness’. Still, it sounded better to say they worked on it.
”We were chatting about what it was like to be an alicorn, and I kind of mentioned that I thought having wings would be pretty cool. So….”
Suddenly, Trixie turned to face Twilight, grinning. Suddenly, her cape flew back and fluttered behind her as Trixie’s wings shot out from the side, spread out as best as she could. Her soft-blue feathers would look reminiscent of Luna’s own wing style, though smaller on Trixie’s smaller body.
"I'm sorry Trixie. I got ahead of myself thinking of what it could be." Twilight offered an apologetic smile to Trixie. She followed Trixie out of the station and onto the streets. She wondered why Trixie had picked the route she had. They weren't heading to the castle. She didn't have much time to ponder the reasoning for the route or their destination before Trixie began to answer some questions.
Twilight raised her eyebrows with interest at Trixie's statement. She had been doing spell work with Luna and had come across something interesting? This was going to be neat! The Unicorn's mind was reeling, trying to see if she could figure out what the surprise was as Trixie added another piece to the puzzle with every word. The Trixie turned, her cape fluttered, and there they were... a pair of blue wings.
She looked upon the other Unicorn, eyes wide with disbelief and mouth slightly open. A few sounds tried to escape her lips, but not enough to form intelligible words. Behind her eyes gears were turning and information was being processed. After a moment she shook it off and let excitement come to her. "That's so cool! How are they made? Can I touch them? Turn around. I want to see your back and the musculature there."

”Meh, don’t worry about it. All will be revealed soon enough,” Trixie said, giving a sly grin back at Twilight as she resisted the urge to ruffle her wings a little teasingly. She had the moment prepared, and she was gonna savor it when it did.
So when they got to a relatively empty part of the street, she was glad to let loose with her wings. Twilight’s disbelief and gaping mouth was like candy to Trixie, who was just eating it up. Finally, she had something over Twilight. Ignoring that it was only for a few days. Letting them settle down beside her on the outside of her cape, she awaited a response from the dumbstruck Twilight. She did not, in anyway, disappoint.
”You’d have to ask Luna for the spell details, but they were just as real as any pegasi wing…or in this case alicorn wing. Used Luna’s wing as a base feather for the spell.”
Since Twilight had asked to look at the wings more, Trixie unhooked the clasp and folded up the cape, rustling her wings a little so Twilight could see them in motion.
”Anyway, feel free to take a look. I got another full day at least before they go poof. According to Luna they’ll go poof in a cloud of feathers. Might keep some as souvenir…and maybe as a base if I can convince her to do it again another time,” she said with a chuckle.
"Ask Luna about this later. Gotcha." Twilight said as she made a mental note for herself. She'd have to seek out Luna and ask her how the spell was done. Maybe she could teach her? For research purposes, obviously. The thought she might use it to help in a Daring Do costume sometime in the future didn't cross her mind not one bit. Nope.
Rainbow Dash can sometimes have trouble sticking a landing, and if she were to lose a feather though... she wouldn't miss a lost feather, right?
With the cape gone, Twilight circled around Trixie to get a better look at the wings. She marveled at their construction. Perhaps she was a little jealous somewhere deep inside of her. Whether it was how Trixie looked and her resemblance to a Princess, or that she had witnessed such magic that was thought to be impossible was unknown. Probably the latter. At least, that's what she was telling herself.
The purple Unicorn reared up and placed her hooves on Trixie's back, feeling her muscle structure and the joints. "Wow this is a really good job. I wish you would have come down to Ponyville to show me this. I have all my equipment there. I could have done scans, taken measurements, made notes. I could have brought in Fluttershy to do a side by side comparison. Do you feel this? How about this? Anything here? There shouldn't be nerve endings in the feathers."

As always, Trixie was enjoyed being the center attention. Even if it was just an audience of one. But, in some ways, Twilight’s opinion was worth a crowded theatre’s, so getting her to be awestruck was a rather big deal to Trixie’s ego. So it was no surprise her head was being held rather high and forward. Didn’t stop her eyes from picking up Twilight’s reactions from the peripheral vision.
Though that tracking didn’t stop Trixie from briefly flinching as Twilight placed her hooves on her back. Now that she thought about it, nopony had actually touched back there, and she was still kind of sensitive to all these new sensations. Although, she had to admit it felt a little nice, like a small massage as Twilight poked and prodded. Not exactly one worth a tip, but okay.
”Er, no, don’t really feel anything at the ends there, but with the way you were prodding at my back there you should consider becoming masseuse. It felt pretty nice actually,” Trixie said with a chuckle,”Anyway, I considered coming down to Ponyville, but I didn’t want to cause too much of a stir. Besides, if this is any indication, I would have spent all my time being your lab rat.”
Ruffling her wings a little bit so Twilight could get the feel of them, Trixie simply kept still so Twilight could get her fill of prodding.
"I just happen to have a basic understanding of the pony nervous system. If you can feel something here, here, and here..." She said as her horn began to glow and a purple sparkle of magic poked three very specific spots along Trixie's back. "Those are nerves that only Pegasi have, and should be completely new to you. Oh if only I had brough my biology book..." Twilight Sparkle settled Trixie's cape back into place before she returned to standing in front of Trixie, her face just slightly red.
"Okay, maybe you do have a point there Trixie. If we were back at my home I would probably pull out a bunch of medical books and equipment to try and study what happened. Though I will have you know that any rats that I do use in my lab are well cared for and Fluttershy approved. No more probing though for the time being, not unless you give the okay."
"So Trixie, what do you want to do today? I mean, now that the big surprise is all over with."

Trixie twitched just a little bit as Twilight poked at some spots on her back. Apparently even if she was the one with the wings Twilight was a little more informed about how they work. Great, Trixie even bet that if Twilight got wings she’d probably master them faster….ugggh, stupid jealousy.
”Sure we could just grab a book at the library or something if it’s really that important. Probably should have read up a little more on this, but the whole thing was kind of spontaneous,” Trixie said, lifting a wing a bit while looking at her back. Even after a couple days it was still kind of weird to see all those new muscles and stuff moving.
At least Twilight could agree about her being a total nerd. Apparently a scientifically ethical nerd, but a nerd none the less.
”Don’t worry about it, I kind of expected you to do that anyway. Even I kind of spent some time poking myself in disbelief at first. I mean, it is a pretty amazing spell after all. Too bad it’s only a three day limit…”
Trixie shrugged and then turned a bit, continuing to walk down the alleyway towards the main street.
”Anyway, figured we could just hang out a bit, maybe get some lunch and catch up. I mean, things have been pretty good for me lately, but I’m pretty sure you’ve got something going on too right?”
Twilight walked along with Trixie, trying to put the thought of examining the enchantment to the back of her mind. There was a time and place for everything. If she really had to learn about how it was done, it'd be better to go to the source anyways. She could go pay Luna a visit sometime, but not now.
"That sounds like a lovely idea Trixie." she said with a cheerful smile. Things were going good for Trixie, which was a great sign! Oh, to be a personal student again and get one on one teaching! "Things have actually... been pretty quiet. Not to say things have been boring, but I've been thinking of re-enrolling in school. I can work on getting a degree. Maybe even go for a doctorate if I really apply myself."
"So, aside from the obvious, what's new with you?"

"Ugggh, you didn't have enough of school already?" Trixie replied, a bit of a smile to note she she was joking....a little bit. School, after all, was never really her thing, so the idea of going back for more was out of her league. Still, Twilight was the book nerd so couldn't diss it that much.
"But anyway, mostly just been studying magic or hanging out with Luna, walking around the city a bit. Guess not too sure where it's all going, but for now just kind of enjoying it," Trixie replied, wings just kind of ruffling a bit as they stepped out of the alley and heading back onto a main street.
As they talked Trixie walked towards a small little cafe with an outdoor patio area for them to sit and hangout at.
"I've had plenty of school, but there's always so much out there to learn. Besides, I can't go around being known as Celestia's student forever, especially since I haven't studied under her for a while now." Twilight followed alongside Trixie to the café Her horn light up with a faint bit of magic as she pulled a seat out for herself and waited for Trixie so they could sit at the same time.
"So, Trixie, how are you getting along with the staff and guards at the castle?" As a filly (and in general) Twilight was always neat and tidy so there was never a member of the staff having to follow behind her to sweep up cookie crumbs. She never caused much trouble, or may much noise. She liked to believe that things had been well... though as she grew older Shinging Armor could have made it an order to treat her right.

"I don't think too many think of you as Celestia's student now Miss Element of Magic," Trixie replied, gently bumping Twilight before they arrived at the cafe.
Taking a seat across, wings folded at her side, Trixie smiled a little proudly at some of the odd looks she was getting. Nobody was coming to bother them just yet, but they were at least looking.
"Oh, it's been fine for the most part. Had an incident with a water mage doing some plumbing but, uh....hey, just to ask, is there like any part of your family tree that your family just kind of lost contact with?"
Twilight took her seat and looked down a little, her hoof drawing little circles on the table. "I know... I send her reports all the time on what I've learned and how things are going... it's just a bit disheartening not hearing back. I guess I kinda miss things." Maybe Trixie had a bit of a point. Would Celestia react if suddenly the friendship reports came signed differently? Not from her faithful student, but from the Element of Magic. That was a thought to dwell on later.
Trixie's next line of conversation was a good change of subject! A water mage sounded fascinating! She wondered if this mage knew anything really interesting she could show her. "To be honest it's been a long time since I've had to do a report on my lineage, and even then it was mostly just a family tree. I don't know of anyone specific, but I can ask my parents!"

"Wait, Celestia doesn't write back? That's pretty rude of her..." Trixie replied, raising an eyebrow. If she was making Twilight write letters the least she could do was respond. Made her feel a little better about having Luna as her mentor; she definitely seemed a bit more hooves on...not that Trixie couldn't deal with independent research of course. Just, well, it felt nice getting feedback was all.
"Anyway, was just asking cause that water mage mare looked almost exactly like you, if you fell into like tropical punch or something," she said, waving a hoof at Twilight to just kind of emphasize the point,"I actually kind of thought she was you and surprised her and it broke a pipe and things just kind of got out of hoof. We're okay now though. Owes me some new books though since for some reason after she was done with them they weren't readable..."
Yeah, Trixie actually did look at the books after a while and had found that they were no longer exactly readable. She'd get Dewdrop Dazzle back for that..
