#Other appearance details ; Big Mac often wears a horse collar because of his working in the fields. Other times when he's more relaxed and off work, he'll either wear nothing or something simple like a flannel shirt. Though, in his dreams he wears the garb of a Princess. And, ahem, Orchard Blossom wears a lovely light blue dress.
#Personality ;
Big Mac has spent many days working the fields of Sweet Apple Acres. His work ethic is untouched. Macintosh values a hard day's work more than most ponies would dream. When he sets his mind to work on something or help someone out, it'd take something heavier than a house to stop him.
Family is extremely important to every Apple member. Big Macintosh is no exception. He respects Granny Smith greatly and wants to help her however he can. He's proud of Applejack and everything she's accomplished for Equestria. Big Macintosh loves little Apple Bloom and hopes that she grows into a capable mare. Sometimes family can drive each other crazy... Big Macintosh can name a few times that were unbearable but he chooses not to name them. He buries the hatchet in many cases in favor of moving forward happily. In the end, the Apple Family always comes together. Big Mac wouldn't replace them for the world.
Applejack has become a hero for all of Equestria... Big Mac is happy for her and proud of all the good she's accomplishing, but... Big Macintosh has developed a small sense of inadequacy. It first came to light by Apple Bloom but it extends beyond Apple Bloom's admiration. Big Macintosh dreams of being something more important and doing something more important for Equestria. He loves working on the farm but he just feels like there's something more he could be doing. In Applejack's shadow, it's like everything he does is almost pointless.
One of the first things a pony will notice about Big Macintosh is that he doesn't talk much unless it really matters. He feels the most open around his family but others can achieve the stallion's words with good friendship. Big Macintosh knows how to hold his tongue and use it to the most effectiveness... He's no fancy wordplayer like the nobles in Canterlot but he feels that he gets the job done.
Big Mac isn't the big manly stallion that so many believe him to be. After the Want it Need it incident, he sleeps with Smarty Pants tucked under his arm. He dreams of being an important Princess, dressed in full garb. And, he even decided to dress up as his "cousin" Orchard Blossom for Apple Bloom. Big Macintosh just finds it easy to be many things other than what others think he is for whatever reason he needs. He doesn't care what others think of him and has fun with feminine or foalish behavior. If you don't believe it, look at how much fun he had with Apple Bloom after the Sisterhooves Social or how he played with his food!
#History ;
Big Macintosh was the first child to be born from the modern Apple Family. He was a quiet but determined young colt. He helped on the farm as soon as he was physically able. He did anything he could, from fetching water to carrying baskets. When he could finally buck trees right, he felt a surge of happiness that couldn't be described. He even got his cutie mark at that young age, knowing in his heart that as long as he worked hard and was true to himself, nothing he did could be wrong.
That feeling of warmth was dwarfed when Applejack was born. He didn't think he could care for someone like he did that little orange foal. He helped her in any way he could, while he continued his classwork and farmwork. It only doubled when Apple Bloom was born. He was a big brother. He needed to be the best he could be.
Then, his parents died. Big Mac didn't know how to register it. He was a young teenager, trying to figure out how to become a stallion... His own little sister left the farm to try to find herself. He stayed behind with Granny Smith and Apple Bloom. In that time, he threw himself into his work and focused on nothing else. But, fate brought his sister home and with it, her cutie mark.
As time passed, he learned to accept the death of his parents and move past it for them all. He made a name for himself as a strong, hard working stallion that mares seemed to really find interesting. Big Mac didn't pay them any attention and just kept working. As he grew into a stallion, he noticed many others his age getting married and starting families. Yet... He was still on the farm. Still uninterested in that... Why?
Applejack was revealed to be the Element of Honesty and with that... Everything changed. Apple Bloom began to look up to her more and more and forgot the way she and Big Mac used to spend time together. Applejack was universally declared a hero and someone to look up to. Big Mac started feeling... less capable. Not as many ponies were looking at him for strength and character. He wasn't a prideful pony but it felt a little sad to be so easily pushed to the side.
Through reunions, Pinkie Pie, and Orchard Blossom, Big Mac pushed past it and resolved to stick to what he learned from his cutie mark. As long as he worked hard and stayed true to himself, he'd be okay. But maybe that'd take him away from the Apple farm. Who knew? He'd still love his family deeply and work hard for his future. Big Macintosh's eyes opened to darkness. It was the middle of night. He could tell because the moon still shone high in the sky outside of his window. The old house creaked and groaned with every particularly sturdy wind. The large stallion rolled over in bed, making sure to keep the small stuffed horse he called a nighttime companion close.
He focused on a singular point on the ceiling and exhaled slowly. This happened sometimes. He couldn't sleep. He was thinking too much about... everything. Granny Smith's health. All the dangerous things both Applejack and Apple Bloom did on a daily basis. At least Apple Bloom wasn't as bad as she was when she was trying to get her cutie mark. But Applejack faced unimaginable perils. All of Equestria hadn't realized how bad it was until Tirek. Previous threats hadn't been so personal. So in your face, ripping the very magic from their bodies... Big Mac still shuddered to think about it. So weak and empty...
He rolled over to face the wall. They could take care of it. He wished he could help. He wished there was something more he could do other than just farming more apples. It was a nice life... But he wasn't helping ponies like Applejack was. What could he even do? He wasn't magically destined like they were. He could join the guard. But was it for him? Other ponies were happy with their lives. They had families and houses and... He was still in the same room he'd lived in all his life.
He pulled Smarty Pants right up against his chest fluff. It wasn't so bad. He loved hearing Granny's stories. The orchard was beautiful at sunset and there was nothing like looking at it after finishing a hard day of work. Watching Apple Bloom grow up every day was a gift. It was the same gift he'd been given with Applejack. He... almost felt like a parent in his own way. After they died, he'd had to...
Big Mac rolled to his original position in bed. He was happy. But his life wasn't over. Things would change at some point. He just had to work towards it. Smarty Pants agreed. "Eeyup." That was enough nighttime musing. He'd need to get up at dawn in order to get things done!
Big Macintosh smiled and closed his eyes.
