-----Some distance outside the Everfree Forest-----
-----Early Afternoon-----
"Darn it!" Thunderlane shouted, nearly tossing the stopwatch he held in his hoof to the ground. He was so close. He had his clear goal, and every day he practiced for it. His journal, pages settling on the side, showed his semi-parabolic rise in speed, which flatlined just around 90%. He panted heavily, looking up towards the point he'd just been floating, nearly a mile straight up. Such a huge start, and he still couldn't get his speed any higher. His training regimen had grown more intense. His wings were stronger than ever, so why couldn't he go any faster?
Was it drag? Was air resistance his biggest foe? No, he should still be able to break terminal with his wings. Even a 1% improvement one of these days would give him some hint as to what he was doing wrong. For now, he just groaned and collapsed. He'd already taken the dive 3 times and he'd hit the same speed almost exactly each trial. The numbers laughed at him. He rolled over onto his back and hung a leg over his eyes. He needed a break. Perhaps if he took a day off, he'd think of something. A day at home with Rumble, or a day in the workshop perfecting the design. Or maybe he'd think of a way around it entirely.
The rain from earlier that day had made the grass nice and cool. It felt good on his wings. He breathed a sigh and let himself smile. "I'll figure it out." He told himself. "Maybe it'll come to me in a dream. Naps are great for the mind, right? Turns out the grass isn't a very good conversationalist. The wind, however, plays a lovely lullaby.
