Pinkie Pie was currently downstairs in Sugar Cube Corner when she heard the door open. She expected it to be her boss/mother figure/friend, as every day really. The mare was dived deep into the oven, working on getting something out.
"My Pinkie Sense kept me up all night, telling me something was going on! So I just HAD to stay up to see what it was! I never really figured out, but I made some new cupcake flavors! I can't BELIEVE we've never tried these yet!"
She finally cake back out, with cupcakes in hand, and turned around quickly.
"Oh. You're not Mrs. Cake. But would you like to try some cupcakes anyway?"
"Earth worms, maybe?" he blurted out, looking eagerly at the cupcakes. "With hot sauce?" That would definitely make an appealing mix, Spike thought. Spicy and gooey, all at the same time. The baby dragon found himself drooling as he recalled why he had really come.
To spend his day in peace as Twilight hadn't given him extra chores and he had been expecting extra chores today. It had been a while since she started a project on something bizarre and taxing, so he had cleared off his normal duties quite early. Naturally, that left him with nothing to do and Pinkie was the most safe fun he could think of.
"They couldn't be those, though... you've done worms and you've done hot sauce." His tone was almost dejected but not really because free cupcakes. He'd probably buy a few after he tried because gluttony Pinkie Pie was a good friend and he enjoyed paying patronage to her place of employment because that was what friends did. Yes.
Needless to say, Spike would gingerly grab one of the cupcakes and flip it into the air, wrapper and all into his mouth. All he could do as he bit down into the confection was hope that it was something he would like, but Pinkie rarely baked anything he didn't find delectable.
"See, but it was something SO glaringly apparent it's AMAZING we never thought of it before!" She exclaimed. As the cupcake hit Spike's tongue, she'd begin her explanation. "It's a mixture! I saved a little bit of the Zap Apple Jam from this year to make it. Zap Apple Jam, raspberry AND hot sauce!"
Glaringly amazing was exactly right! Though, the raspberry seemed a little out of place to him. The Zap Apple added just the right amount of tingle while the hot sauce pulled Spike's tongue back home like an angry mother dragged her foal by the ear. Perhaps he was wrong, though, he thought as the cupcake slid down his throat with an audible gulp.
The raspberry added a very petite sweetness; the cupcake may have been too energetic without it.
"It's great!" Spike replied at last after relishing the after taste of the cupcake. Everything had an after taste to Spike. He wondered if ponies could taste like that. He would have to pester Twilight about a body swap spell or something so he could indulge himself with a different palatte later. Because that was an excellent use of her time, yep.
Struggling to pull himself up to height to see over the counter, Spike would look into the still open over. "... how many did you make?" It suddenly occurred to him that there might not be many spicy Zap Apple-raspberry cupcakes. He didn't want to be ... greedy with them if that wa so. However, if they were in abudance he would give himself in to frivolity and purchase a few.
Trust good ole Pinkie to do something plot relatately nice, not that Spike would know anything about the "plot". He nodded as she explained, allowing himself to drop back to the floor. She had to go shopping? That sounded fun. He'd seen her and Rarity shop before. It was absolutely vicious. Normally he hated it, but he figured she could make anything enjoyable.
"Nope; I was going to visit for a bit. Free day." He'd grin cheekily, letting her know if she was free two they should do something crazy. Maybe even throw a bachelor party! The one he had thrown after Shining Armor's birthday had been pretty fun, though Twilight kept muttering something about "before" the wedding. Why? Shining Armor technicially wasn't a bachelor, though most of his best men were. Besides, they enjoyed the Equestria's Funniest Memory Projections as much as they enjoyed the Pony Pokey.
The bell attatched to the door of Sweet Apple Acres chimed out as the door swung open. The sound of hoofsteps against the wood floor that followed stopped suddenly. The pale blue pegasi that had walked in had stopped dead in his tracks, mouth hanging open.
Now, it wasn't quite clearly to anypony else why he was doing this, but even in his stunned state, Soarin' knew what had caused this freeze-up. Something smelled delicious. And it was close. The Wonderbolt had a feeling that his Rainbow-maned aquaintance was 100% correct about this bakery. And boy was he glad he decided to pay this place a visit, especially since Canterlot was relatively close to Ponyville. He could come here as often as he wanted during his force vacation/sick leave if he wanted.
Hearing somepony else's voice helped snap Soarin' out of his food-induced trance. The Pink pony behind the counter seemed very familiar...and he couldn't recall ever seeing a baby dragon that wasn't the one in this room. It took him a moment, but he remembered where he had seen them: the Royal Wedding! Sure, they were a bit hard to notice when they weren't in formal ware, but it wasn't that hard.
"Huh? Oh! Yeah, I think you can," Soarin' said, the spinning wheels in his head finally getting back up to speed. "I just heard about this place from a friend, and I was in the neighborhood...sort of... and decided to pop in. So, what do you sell here? Whatever's cooking now smells amazing!"
Spike stepped hastily out of the way of the food-focused flyer. The big blue balooka gave Spike and Pinkie a once over kind of look.
... D-did he know this guy? The oddest sensation told him that yes, yes, in a round-about kind of way he did know this guy. For some reason he kepting thinking "he needs goggles" but that was obsurd because what pony wore goggles on aday-to-day basis? Rediculous.
Spike relaxed a bit, allowing Pinkie to do business. He was a big enough boy that he didn't need to be told to not breath all over customers.
"We sell baked goods!" She chittered. "Cupcakes, cookies, cakes, pies, double LAYER cakes, cookies within cookies, triple layer cakes, mousse, croissants, cakes with as many layers as you want-" Her chirping ended then. "Basically, anything you want, we can probably make!!"
She bounced over to the oven and pulled the tray of Zap Apple Jam-Raspberry-Spicecakes out of the oven.
"These are brand new! I made this whole recipe just last night! Would you like to try one?"
As Pinkie finished her description of what Sugar Cube Corner had to offer, Soarin' had to conciously hold back his joy, otherwise he'd squeal like a giddy schoolgirl. Was he dead right now? Because this place sounded an awful lot like heaven.
"Oh, Yes, Please!" Soarin' said as reached over and grabbed one, holding it in his hoof. "Thank you."
Soarin' gave the spicecake a sniff. It smelled just as good done as it did when it was baking. With no delay, Soarin' took a bite out of the cupcake. He froze up again mid-chew, wings unfolding and popping out. It somehow managed to taste even better than it smelled.
"This.....is INCREDIBLE!" Soarin said, mouth still full of cupcake. "What's in this? Who made it? Who's idea was this?"
Soarin' didn't wait for an answer, he just went right on with eating it.
"It's a Zap Apple Jam, Raspberry, Spicecake!" Pinkie Pie grinned. "Like I said, I came up with it last night and made 'em! This is Sugarcuge Corner and I'm Pinkie Pie!" She smiled her biggest smile then.
Soarin' had just about finished when Pinkie Pie finally introduced herself. He had no idea what Zap Apple Jam was, but she was DEFINATELY onto something when she decided to put in the spicecakes. He put the last bit of it in his mouth, and wiped away any excess crumbs from his face with his hoof.
"Well, Pinkie Pie, that was amazing. Is all the stuff here as amazing as that?" Soarin' asked. "Because I'm more than willing to try, and possibly buy, anything you've got. I've got a bit of a sweet tooth, I guess."
If it was possible for her smile to get bigger, it did as stars and money signs flashed before her eyes. If Sugar Cube Corner was able to get a lot of money... why... there was a LOT that could be done. Maybe they could finally remodel like they'd been talking about since before she even got there!
"Yessirree! There's lots of nummy things in here! What sort of thing would you like to try?" She set off into the same tangent as earlier about what they sold here.
