Whoosh!
The sun was high in the sky, but it was icy cold and fresh this morning. Of course, being winter, that was perfectly natural. The sunlight was cut into ribbons of light and dark by the branches of the bare winter trees, and that was natural, too. However, sliding down a rather steep hill on a flattened cardboard box was a most unnatural creature. At least, for the Whitetail Woods!
Nyarai relished the sense of speed without effort, a feeling of flying. She had observed other foals sliding down slopes on carved and crafted pieces of wood, and she had wanted to try it. But she didn't have a sled as they were called, or a snowboard. But this abandoned bit of cardboard worked just as well! ...Except it couldn't be steered, she discovered, when she smashed into a half-hidden log in the snow and was sent on a new journey, spinning and flying through the air, to land in a mercifully soft snowbank.
The little aqua striped zebra struggled out of the drift, none the worse for wear, and looked around, giving herself a little shake to rid herself of some snow. She had come here for a Purpose not just for fun. Ponyville was so different from the places she'd been before, particularly Canterlot. The royal city was kept amazingly clean compared to other cities, but it still had a share of dark, dead end alleys and places where a tired little foal could hide out and rest in (relative) warmth and safety. Ponyville wasn't like that. It was less tidy, but open. The town itself didn't have many places in it to hide. And everyone noticed things. Unlike Canterlot, Nyarai drew a lot more attention when she walked through the town.
So it wasn't safe to sleep there. But that meant finding some sort of shelter if she didn't want to freeze. And it needed to be hidden. That's why Nya had come. Looking around, the Zebra spotted a large hollow log. How would that suit? She trotted over for a closer look. No, that wouldn't do. Not only was it facing in a direction that the wind would completely blow through, it was rather too small for her to get in and out of, reliably. She did not want to get stuck!
Nya spotted a pine tree, the kind with drooping low, snow-covered branches, and eagerly she went over to it. As she thought, there was no snow underneath, and there was a small circular clearing covered with old pine needles. Nya pushed these into a nest like shape and snuggled into it. This wasnt too bad! It wasnt too cramped, and the dry needles would help keep her warm... but then again, the branches above kept snow out, they wouldn't be able to help much with rain, or snow melt. Hmm. No, this wouldn't do after all. Still, Nya remained under the pine to warm up a little, gazing out at the snowy landscape and considering...
