The house Fossil lived in was still same one that he and Daring had grown up in when they hadn't be out adventuring with their parents. The building was large and most of it was built into the side of the mountain. The front was constructed in classic Canterlot design, but the inside was designed and furnished with influences from all around the world. While most of it was inside the mountain, only a small portion of the house looked vaguely cave-like. Most rooms looked like regular rooms, complete with windows. Granted the windows weren't clear, but they gave the illusion that the rooms were more open than they really were. The lighted windows were even on a timer so one could tell if day or night was approaching.
Then there were the secret passages, but those were a secret.
Fossil Stone had taken a sub-basement for his own uses as a magical laboratory. The room had felt large when it was empty, but with all of his equipment in it, the room felt somewhat cozy. It was also very asymmetrical. There were thirteen wooden pillars spaced out randomly in the room, each one carved with depictions of various mythological scenes. There were thirteen bookcases of varying heights, widths, and number of shelves. Not every work station in the room had a stool by it, and those that did have one didn't match. Everything about the room and furniture was numerically odd, and it all served a purpose.
At the far end of the room was a cleared out space that held a circle large enough to fit two ponies comfortably. The circle was created by three rings of silver, iron, and gold. It was meant to be a safe place to practice magic in. Any magic that could somehow slip past his defenses would quickly get diffused in the chaotic aura the room had. It was all very technical, and made sure he never did anything that would blow up the rest of the house.
Fossil Stone was currently at one of his work stations, the one reserved for taking notes and getting his ideas and thoughts on paper. This work station had no stool, letting him walk around freely if he got to pacing in thought. Being so low beneath the main structure also had the benefit of making sure anything he did didn't bother anyone in the house. He had a habit of staying up long hours giving dictation to an enchanted quill, or working with magic that could be very... loud under the wrong circumstances.
