It was strange. She'd felt connected, now, to this Wonderbolt. Looking down at the salad, her heart did a somersault. The shape resonated with her, reminding her of what this was. A date. With Fleetfoot. Though she couldn't see it, she felt as though Fleet were watching her carefully. Suddenly, a mild panic set in. Her breath became a little bit shorter, her eyes flicked to Fleet for just a moment, and then back down at the food they were offered. Was she doing the right thing? Did she really have feelings for a mare? Was that even possible? Her mind kept telling her that she did, or she might, or something. So what if she did something wrong? This was probably the last chance she was going to get to do this the right way. If she screwed up here, well, Fleetfoot would definitely not be the easiest pony to get in contact with.
Ok, Octavia, go from there. If you don't know yet, you need to just do everything the right way. You can decide later, but if you lose the chance then it's lost.
"It almost looks too good to eat. But with all that work, and all our walking, I think we'll have to. You go first."
Meep. She stared at the platter for a moment. There were so many choices! Which fruit should she grab? A cherry? Or was that too forward? Perhaps one of the blackberries around the edge of the heart. No, no, that would make it look strange. Perhaps an apple or melon? Ooh, but shouldn't they eat the heart first, and then the backdrop?
Internally, she smacked herself. She actually had to stop herself from doing it physically. You're being silly. Just relax and eat something. She reached down and grabbed a random piece of fruit into her hoof. She stared at it for a moment, taking a deep breath and letting it out. It was a raspberry. Something pulled her back from eating it though. Eating had suddenly become something awkward and nerve wracking. She gave another look at the pony sitting next to her, fought down the thumping that had worked its way into her throat, and allowed herself to smile sweetly.
"I wouldn't feel right eating first." She paused and questioned whether or not that was a normal thing to say. "Same time?" Again, possibly awkward, but now that it was out there there was no taking it back. She hoped holding back the shivers didn't make her look to tense, but for now she could do nothing but wait for a response.
