"I wasn't afraid... not of you. I trust you." Sweetheart protested, gently, looking up at him. She blushed again, because even though she knew there was nothing false and shameful in what she wanted to say, she still felt shy and a embarrassed. "I didn't know it until this train ride, but..I'm in love with you. When I ...showed you..." Here she blushed an even deeper pink, but she didn't look regretful now! "...I was afraid of what your answer might be. I was afraid you might think badly of me. But I wasn't afraid of you"
It was indeed a cider moment, and though Braeburn hadn't mentioned cider, Sweetheart was thinking much the same thing. Love him though she did, (and would she ever get tired of admitting it now?) looking at him right now made her feel shy. Having something warm to hold on to- and almost as though reading her unspoken thought, Braeburn took her hoof in his own- and to look into as a distraction would have been a comfort.
"So does that mean that you might wanna go steady with me? Ah know spring is right around the corner, and the weather back home makes it look like we'll be gettin' it early and everypony will get busy, but Ah wouldn't mind havin' you for company."
...Going steady....
That was a phrase that brought a lot of thoughts and memories to mind. Sweetheart realized that, for all they had become so close, there were still things she hadn't discussed, simply because she wouldn't let herself think about them. And after all they'd already been through tonight, now was not the time to bring them up. But she would have to find the time to do it soon. Going steady would be something she had to write home about. Well, not "had"- she would be happy to write home about it. She wanted to write home and tell her family all about her beloved Braeburn. They knew of him, of course, but this would be something unexpected.
And it was true that Spring would make them both very very busy. Sweetheart was already half-booked for almost the entirety of the spring months, including all of her family rooms. Some families moving to Appleoosa would be staying with her while they got their homes put up. She'd invited one of her brothers to come stay and help during the season, but she didn't know if he'd take the offer or not. If he didn't, she could manage, she was sure, but there would still be a lot of work.
And Braeburn would be just as, or possibly even more busy than herself. What Sweetheart knew about farming could fit in a flowerpot- and that, she hoped, would be something Braeburn could help her with in time- but one of those things she did know was that it was long, hard work. There might be times where he just could not find the time to come and see her. Then I will go and see him. Sweetheart answered herself.
"I want to go steady with you." Sweetheart answered in a shy little whisper, coloring up yet again. "I know things are going to be busy and maybe difficult with Spring and Summer up ahead, but I think that- that if I have you to think about... That things will never be too much." It sounded a little silly, but Sweetheart stuck by her statement.
