It wasn't supposed to happen quite this way. Sweetheart had been planning a trip back to Fillydelphia- not a long one, mind you, just a week- to visit her parents. It had been a while since she'd seen them, and she had news that would just be better if expressed to them pony-to-pony. She'd gotten her brother Starburst to agree to mind the inn, some of her mare friends in Appleoosa to do the housekeeping and cooking while she was gone- Her brother wasn't very good at either of those tasks. Everything had been set.
And then, the letter had come. The letter with the royal seal.
Our Faithful Subject Sweetheart, (it had read,)
We do not know if the news has reached Appleoosa yet, but a land thought to be lost to myth and legend, The Crystal Empire, has reappeared. It's ponies have been sealed away for time out of mind, and upon reawakening, are not themselves, being lethargic, low-spirited, and unable or unwilling to do much for themselves. Recalling to mind that you were once a castle servant of excellent repute, that you have a talent for making ponies feel comfortable and at ease, we would ask you not to delay, but at once make your way to the Crystal Empire by train, there to set about doing everything you can can to comfort and cheer the Crystal ponies. We are confident that you will be of great aid and assistance in this task, as well as to Princess Cadance and Prince Shining Armor.
So that plan was out. Sweetheart wasn't really sure of the difference she could make, but if the princesses thought that she could be of some use, even a small one, then to the Crystal Empire the mare would go. And it wasn't like she was going alone!
...That was how she found herself standing in the center of the Crystal Piazza, feeling just a little bit intimidated and wondering how to begin. She looked around. She saw a couple crystal ponies sitting around in the sunshine and looking unhappy. She saw some crystal foals looking miserably out of a window. Low spirited didn't even begin to describe it. Her heart went out to them, they looked so... so sad.
Well, she couldn't begin any sooner than now. She saw an unused, open-air kitchen that had all the amenities she'd need. She commandeered it. She'd start with something she did, (so ponies said) particularly well. She'd cook something better to eat than the plain, cold rations that were filling, but kind of heartless. If she could just find that crate of vegetables.... She began searching through a stack of crates that held supplies.
