Pony Species
Non-Pony Species
Diamond Dogs
Diamond Dogs are large, dog-like creatures that tend to live in more mountainous areas of Equestria. They tend to live in subterranean burrow and have a particular affinity for working with jewels and mining with their digging skills.
Original characters are allowed to be Diamond Dogs.
Donkey
They're donkeys...not much else to say. Original characters are allowed to be donkeys.
Draconequus
Draconequus are creatures that are made up of a jumble of different body parts of different animals. Currently the only known one is Discord.
Obviously, Original Characters are NOT allowed to be Draconequus.
Dragons
A variety of dragons exist in the world, usually more lizard-like in terms of appearance. They rarely interact with ponies and are more likely to be found living in isolated caves in forests or mountains with giant hordes of treasure. When not being involved in the Great Dragon Migration of course.
Original Characters are allowed to be either BABY or TEENAGE dragons.
Griffon
Griffons (alternate spellings include griffin or gryphon) are a half eagle/half lion species. Like pegasi, they are able to walk on clouds and fly. As they are not necessarily native to Equestria, they are a rarer species to see. For more information on site canon regarding Griffons, please see our Griffon entry in the Royal Library
Original characters are allowed to be griffons.
Minotaur
A creature that is half bull/cow and half pony. Their upper body tends to be that of a bull or cow (but have hands instead of hooves), while the lower body tends to have the legs of a pony.
Original characters are allowed to be minotaurs.
Zebra
Natives to a land outside of Equestria, zebras lack cutie marks but have special and unique tattoos that serve a similar purpose. It seems that zebras have a culture similar to that of African tribes.
Original characters are allowed to be zebras.
For information on other creatures in Equestria, see the list of Creatures and Wildlife on the Friendship is Magic wiki. Unless otherwise stated above, please ask staff about playing the creatures.[/blockquote]
Earth Ponies
Earth Ponies lack distinguishing features like a Pegasus'wings or a Unicorn's horn. However, Earth Ponies have a special connection with animals and nature that make them very well suited to being farmers, as shown in Equestrian history when the Earth Ponies were the only ones able to grow food. They are also usually physically stronger and more durable than the other ponies, making them very well suited for manual labor. Of course, not all Earth Ponies are in these kind of professions.
Original characters are allowed to be Earth Ponies.
Unicorn
Unicorn's are famous for two things; the singular horn on their foreheads, and their ability to actively use magic (unlike the other species of ponies who use more passive magic). Unicorn's are capable of performing basic magic skills such as telekinesis as well as magical abilities related to their special skills.
Original characters are allowed to be Unicorns.
Pegasus
Pegasus ponies possess wings and have passive magic that allows them to walk on clouds and manipulate weather. Many pegasi come from the city of Cloudsdale, a city in the sky that is home exclusively to to pegasi and where the weather of Equestria is produced.
Original characters are allowed to be Pegasi.
Crystal Ponies
Originating from the Crystal Empire, Crystal Ponies are a special breed of Earth Ponies that have a crystalline and transparent appearance. They specialize in the growing and crafting of crystals. Their most unique property, however, is their appearance is empathetic; the more full of spirit they are, the more crystalline their appearance. Makes them really bad at poker though...
Original characters are allowed to be Crystal Ponies.
Bat Ponies
A unique race of ponies that live in the caves and other dark places of Equestria. Like pegasi, they have wings and can fly, but instead of feathers their wings are leathery like a bat's wing. They have excellent night time vision, but are a little sensitive to light and sound. For more information on Bat Ponies, please see the Bat Ponies entry in the Royal Library.
Original characters are allowed to be Bat Ponies.
Alicorns
A special subset of unicorns, alicorns are a mixture of pegasi and unicorns, having wings and the ability to use magic. Alicorns are very rare, with only the princesses themselves (Celestia, Luna, and Cadance) being of this species.
Original characters are NOT allowed to be alicorns.
Non-Pony Species
Buffalo
Native to the more "western" themed areas of Equestria, buffalos live in nomadic tribes and have a culture similar to that of Native Americans.
Original characters are allowed to be buffalo.
Breezies
Breezies are small, pony-like creatures that are often described as being "fairy ponies". Their tiny size makes them rather fragile creatures, and they often don't stray far from home. In large groups, however, they have access to special abilities to defend themselves. For more information on site canon regarding Breezies, please see our Breezie entry in the Royal Library.
Original characters are allowed to be Breezies.
Caribou
A species not native to Equestria, they come from lands up north, often having to cross the seas in order to visit Equestria. Their culture is very similar that to Scandinavian cultures of the Viking-Era. For more information on site canon regarding Caribou, please see our Caribou entry in the Royal Library.
Original characters are allowed to be Caribou.
Changeling
Changelings are a species nonnative to Equestria. They are pony-esque but have a bug-like appearance to them as well. They have a special ability that allows them to take on the appearance and mimic other creatures. Unlike other creatures, their source of nourishment are feelings of love, not food. For more information on site canon regarding Changelings, please see our Changeling entry in the Royal Library.
Original characters are allowed to be Changelings.
