Alright, so another Great and Powerful Trixie episode has come and gone, and with it more information on Trixie after Boast Busters and just more Trixie awesomeness. It terms of info on Trixie, we found out that apparently after Boast Busters she was laughed out of and ostracized by other towns (the latter probably more self-induced due to her ego but whatever). Also, she worked on Pinkie Pie’s family’s rock farm; I’m sure that’s worth a couple of fics in of itself XD. But this doesn’t really contradict too much of what a lot of people thought happened to Trixie so good news on that.
In terms of the plot, seems Equestria does not have good control over dangerous artifacts. It’s a little disappointing that fan theories regarding Sombra didn’t pan out though as that would have been a perfect reason for something like the Alicorn Amulet to exist in the first place >_>. Hmm…*makes note that shopkeeper like that could work like that shopkeeper from the Doctor Who episode “Turn Left”.
The Alicorn Amulet itself is nothing special; standard “Great power but corrupts you” sort of thing. So in that regards this episode does work like something I might expect a more revenge-driven Trixie might do; go and grab powerful artifact without understanding full consequences just to show up Twilight. I do think Twilight’s exile and time with Zecora should have been drawn out so we could learn more about Zecora.
Actually, this really could have been a two-parter with the exile. Everything did feel a little rushed, but still good overall. The benefit of the two-parter, other than Zecora, was the ending with Trixie might have been a little better, but at least we know now that Trixie is capable of actually being nice. Still has the ego it seems, but really, would she even be Trixie if she didn’t have it? No, I don’t think so.
Moral was pretty nice, basic “magic of friendship”. No need for UNLIMITED POWER when you have friends who can stand by your side after all.
But as we like power too this was a good episode. Lots of cool magic shown; age-changing, size expansion, deleting Pinkie Pie’s mouth (I will fully admit I was okay with that…Pinkie Pie can get a little annoying to me >_>). I will admit I was disappointed by Twilight’s magic at the end turning out to be her friends though. Do you know how much fun could be had with stuff like gender-bending spells? And now the show says “Nope, can’t be done” =P….screw it, I’m ignoring that cause too much fun. Should have suspected something was up since “stallion” AJ looked like Big Mac, but got too caught up in the whole thing to notice. Still, for the morals and themes of the show “friends helping in an illusion” is better than “train better and become even more powerful than your enemy” so I can’t really complain.
So overall I found it an enjoyable episode, if maybe a little rushed.
