#Name; Fossil Stone
#Age Group ; Stallion
#Gender ; Male
#Species; Unicorn
#Cutie Mark ;
#Occupation ; Author, College Professor, Mage
#Powers and Abilities ; Fossil Stone has devoted most of his life to developing his skills in the art of magic. While a very knowledgeable in just about every field of magic, he prefers to work more with ritual thaumaturgy rather than the instant evocations Unicorns mostly use today.
#Physique ; Tall and lean.
#Mane and fur color and style ; Fossil's mane and tail consist of seven shades of blue going from a neutral blue to a very dark blue. His fur is a dull dark gray, with his hooves being even darker.
#Eye color ; Gold
#Other appearance details (optional) ; Unlike his sister, Fossil's stripes are in a neat and orderly row. As for clothing, he is always wearing something with long sleeves to hide how his front right leg looks. While he doesn't need glasses to see, he does keep a pair of reading glasses with him. His magical aura is a dark jade green.
#A more thorough description (optional) ;Fossil Stone is a tall stallion, even topping someone like Big Mac if you include his horn into his height. Unlike the beefy workhorses he shares his height with, he does not share their large muscular form. Fossil got his thin body from spending most of his life sitting behind a desk with his head in a book or scroll. His front right leg is dotted with scars from his hoof to just below his shoulder due to an unfortunate accident he had as a child. The injury has left him with a noticeable limp, and while he doesn't always us it, he carries a crutch with him when the old injury begins to bother him.
Fossil Stone keeps himself very well groomed with his mane styled back and out of his way, and his coat always neatly brushed. While always seen with a long sleeved shirt of some sort, he prefers wearing a simple white one with buttons. He also likes to wear a tie and a vest giving him an over all appearance of a teacher, which he is one.
#Personality ;
The most common adjective used bystudentsponies to describe Fossil Stone is boring. His face always seems to hold a cheerless expression even when receiving good news. He's not one to show how he feels, whether he's excited or disappointed he seems to have the same expression on his face. He's failed at a good number of things he's wanted to do in his life, and he learned long ago to stop getting his hopes up, or letting himself feel down.
There is only one thing where he will publicly show enthusiasm and joy, and that is meeting certain fans of his book series "Daring Do Adventures". As adventure filled as his books are, he fills them with as many facts as possible. As a bit of a perfectionist, he tries to keep as true to descriptions as possible so that his readers actually learn something. Its those fans, the ones who enjoyed learning something, that he loves to meet. Knowing he made learning fun for somepony gives him the warm and fuzzies.
Fossil Stone loves his family. His father and sister are the only two ponies in existence who can get him to show emotions. His sister in particular can get him to smile, roll his eyes, use sarcasm, and even laugh... even if its just a little. He'd do anything for his sister Daring. That said, he's secretly envious of her. She gets to go off and have adventures in exotic locations while he can't go to the market without needing a moment to rest. Students fight to get into her class "Awesome Archaeology 101", while he has students fighting to stay awake in his classes. She seems to succeed at whatever she wants to do, and he fails.
#History ;
Fossil Stone grew up along side his sister Daring Do, traveling with her and his parents on many adventures and expeditions through the years. For the most part he was home schooled by his parents so that he could remain with them wherever they went, and he and his sister seemed to soak up facts like a sponge. While some ponies were building lemonade stands, they were learning about engineering and architecture. While some foals played hop scotch, they played "Don't step on the pressure plate". Sadly, back in those days though, the floor was never made of any actual lava.
Fossil was the first of the family of four to leave the adventuring life, and not by his choice. The family had found a temple that supposedly housed the Hourglass of Shadows, and went to work. Fossil's mother, who he got his unicorn heritage from, stayed at the entrance to document as much as possible while everypony else went to explore the hallways. Daring, and their father, flew through the halls while Fossil carefully trailed behind to let them know if he sensed any magic at work.
A lesson he had learned from an early age was to never trust a trap. If there were signs something might be trapped, it should always be taken seriously no matter how old it was. There was no knowing if time had weathered away a critical part of it, or if a design was so simple it couldn't possibly break if left along for hundreds of years. He fell victim to the latter. They came to a section of floor decorated with many small tiles, each depicting various phases of the moon. Determining what tiles were safe to step on was simple. In fact, almost too simple for him, and his confidence got the better of him.
Fossil Stone had been so focused on where to step next he hadn't noticed some of the elements of the decorations change. Had he not been so eager to keep pace with the flying members of his family he would have noticed the tapestries on the way go from a cycle of night to a cycle of day. He jumped onto a spot he thought was safe, and suddenly his leg went through the floor. The thin ceramic tile shattered under his weight, and it triggered a trap. The trap did more than break the leg. His parents did their best to treat the injury and get him to the nearest hospital. Things looked grim.
He got to keep the leg. It would never be fully functional, but he would be able to walk on his own, albeit with a limp. Depending on the weather, or how much stress he put on it he'd feel some discomfort, but nothing too serious. Yes, it is a sad part of his life, but that didn't stop him from being who he was. His mother was a historian with a strong love of mythology. She had based a good deal of her work on studying the differences of magic in various cultures and civilizations throughout history. Fossil Stone had gotten his cutie mark by turning all of that research into practice, and could continue his studies from his home in Canterlot.
The second member of his family to leave the adventuring life was his mother. She had passed on due to illness, and the event seemed to tear the family apart. Fossil threw himself into his work, picking up where his mother left off to make sure it wouldn't go unfinished. The relationship between Daring and their father became more and more strained to the point of her moving out and getting onto the trail of the first rumors she heard about.
The Unicorn got his doctorate in Applied Magical Theory shortly after Daring Do left on her first solo adventure. It hadn't been an easy thing for him to do since he had to convince a board of high mages to agree he was correct. It was a major accomplishment, and he was proud of it. Years of studying, work, and a few renovations to the basement had paid off. The next goal he had was to begin teaching what he knew about magic. A feat he found that was much easier said than done.
Dr. Stone was turned down multiple times when he applied to be a teacher with a number of reasons given. Some said his methods were too unconventional, or it would be too hard to grade their progress, others said older students would be too stuck in their ways to want to learn how to do the same thing differently, and another school turned him down simply because they thought he was trying to run a scam. When he tried to try and teach at a younger level he was turned away because his students would have a harder time adjusting to another magic class once they left his.
His career as a private magic tutor was short lived was short lived when he found out that a few very wealthy families did not agree with their foals being taught how to conjure up fire at a young age. One stallion even tried to take him to court over smoke damage to the ceiling supposedly caused by him. The claim didn't hold up, but it made it clear to him that the only way he'd ever be able to teach the subject he loved was if he took on an apprentice. That wasn't something that seemed like it was going to happen anytime soon, so he fell back on Plan D.
Plan D was to teach Archaeology. While he had been met with resistance every step of the way before, now he was practically welcomed with open arms. Too bad he didn't fair too well at it. Professor Stone had high standards for his classes, was very strict, and ended up not being very well liked by his students who wanted to learn more about the adventure than history. It became even more apparent that he was not so suited to teach the class when Daring Do would have one of her classes. "Awesome Archaeology" she called it, because she skipped the boring parts.
Fossil Stone wrote the first Daring Do adventure novel "Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone" as an attempt to make fun of his sister. He wrote the book using letters she had sent him of her own adventures, and turned the tale into an over the top action adventure book. He had been trying to make a point to say that nobody would believe that archaeology was all about finding some random structure, surviving a gauntlet of death traps, fighting mythical beasts, and getting away with a magical artifact of untold power... and doing it every single time.
It became a best seller.
Even worse, he had it labeled as the first in a series, and fans wanted more.
Despite the distance the two siblings might have between them, they keep in almost constant contact with each other through the mail. He writes the books as Daring tells him about what she's doing, and tweaks it to make a story out of it. While he takes some liberties with it, he also makes sure there are a lot of true facts in the books. If ponies are going to pick the book up to read it, he wants them to be able to learn something from it, even if they don't realize it. Another thing he does with the books is keep his sister's personal life out of it. The character is largely based off of her, but he does not reveal anything personal, even he's not a character in it.
While in the books Daring Rushes in and gets everything done largely on her own, in reality its much different. Fossil helps his sister research everything there is to know about what she's could be dealing with before hand. While she's out on an adventure he still helps her out by translating inscriptions, helping her with puzzles, figuring out if something might have magical importance, or just bouncing ideas off of each other. With his magic they're able to keep in frequent communication. He also takes over teaching her class while she's away. Her students always seem to do better when she returns for some reason.
Daring Do may not exactly be as she's portrayed in the books, but Fossil Stone isn't one to just sit back and let his sister do everything alone.The Roleplayer's Corner

Fossil Stone huffed as he slowly walked down yet another row of train cars outside of Ponyville. For some reason his sister had decided that her next great adventure was going to be in Ponyville, and he was going to find out why. The dark gray unicorn had seen the rail-car he was looking for enough times to no longer need a tracking spell to find it, but all the walking he was doing was still causing his right right leg to ache. A pair of full saddle bags wasn't helping either.
An accident he had as a foal had left him with a crippled leg. He could walk on it with some discomfort, but any more than that was impossible for him. It could have been much worse, and a bum leg never stopped him from being helpful to his sister in one of her adventures. While she was out doing all the hoofwork, he was usually locked up in a study trying to figure out all the ways a magical artifact could work so she wouldn't hurt herself with something. That... or covering her classes while she was out.
The gray unicorn's horn began to glow with a subtle aura as he straightened his tie while approaching the car he was looking for. He reared up and knocked on the metal door with his good hoof in a childish rhythm. "Shave and a mane cut..."
