Okay, so, I finally broke down and watched the Equestria Girls movie. Since it was leaked, while doing so I typed down any thoughts I had while watching. While it’s a little late right now for me to type up an actual organized discussion, I figured might as well share the raw thoughts I had as I went along. Much of it is just randomness, and even my more organized thoughts are primarily going to be reflections and feelings instead of analysis. So, then, move on past the break to get an insight into how my mind works XD.
Watching Twilight adjusting with her wings; adorkable. Does make me question though; how exactly do pegasi sleep? Must rewatch the “Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000” episode and see how Fluttershy was sleeping in the opener…
Remix of opening was okay (not exactly my style), but I absolutely adore the animation during the song.
Guards using unicorn magic for flashlights? Brilliant. Apparently not much in the way of locked doors though.
Magic crown apparently part super-ball.
Big Thoughts: Okay, Sumset Shimmer is a former student of Celestia’s that, when apparently not progressing as fast as she wanted, became cruel. Sort of an interesting backstory, and obviously sets her up to be a foil to Twilight Sparkle. I’m rather interested in Celestia’s reason for moving the portal to the Crystal Empire though; she had hoped that one day Sunset Shimmer would return looking for guidance but never did. Possibly out of regret? Guilt?
Big Thoughts: Gateway-mirror thing only opens every 30 moons. Does Equestria run off a lunar calendar? Cause Granny Smith always seems to reference stuff based on ‘moons’ as well…
Big Thoughts: Okay, Celestia basically prevents the rest of them from going so as to not disrupt the other world too much. Considering Luna already said the presence of one of the Elements can cause serious damage, I guess it makes sense. Maybe a little contrived but, eh, I’m not going to be that picky. Never expect interdimensional travel to be easy after all. Oh, and time limits of course; would be really bad if all the Elements were stuck for a long period of time in another world instead of just one of them.
Gateway to Equestria located in park statue…seems kind of easy for someone to randomly wander into >_>.
Observational learning montage. Yep, that’s Twilight for you. And background pony galore!
Introducing EQ Fluttershy: Gotta love continuity references. Spike adjusted to being a dog pretty quickly though.
Introducing EQ Celestia: Standard principal it seems. Will have to wait and see. Twilight’s reasoning for not telling about the crown seems reasonable enough, though I’m sure there was a way to tell Celestia the crown was hers without the pony stuff…
Introducing EQ Pinkie: It’s Pinkie Pie. Seems to have also dealt with the “where is the EQ Twilight”. Guess it works to set up for any possible future EQ shows and lines…
Introducing EQ Applejack: Main reason for her not liking RD? Backstabbing. Fits within character. So far seems to be doing a decent enough job at setting up the whole “divide and conquer” plotline of Sunset Shimmer.
Great and Powerful Trixie cameo. I am satisfied MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I actually like that the movie took advantage of the modern-ish setting of the world to have the villains actually use it to their advantage by using social media to damage Twilight’s reputation. Considering how much cyber-bullying gets discussed in the news, it’s actually rather interesting to see it being used as a plot point. Also dangit, why does that high school have a better library than my college =P?
I actually kind of thought the scene in the library with Spike and Twilight to be kind of touching. In the show Spike has a habit of being a little greedy and lazy, so to see him have a moment of showing concern and care for Twilight is really nice.
Introducing Rarity: Kidnaps Twilight and dresses her up. So basically just like the original one. Also, her going out of the way to help someone else suffering from social faux pas like that? Fits rather well within her pony-equivalents role of Element of Generosity.
And again, Applejack being upset about an honesty and dedication issue? Seems Sunset Shimmer is pretty good at picking at a person’s weak points. Although it sounds like there were some serious communication issues between them; no one bothered to check their stories? Then again, knowing how people are with grudges and how they act when angry it doesn’t necessarily surprise me.
Introducing RD: Oh poor Twilight; she probably would have trouble beating pony Dash in pony form, let alone her current human body XD. Good thing RD is such a good sport about it all.
Introducing Flash Sentry: *takes deep breath* Okay, people were freaking out about possible love interest so let’s see exactly how this is dealt with *watches*
Okay, a little blushing, a little hair twirling, yawn. Not really anything to be worried about….actually, if someone was worried it could be explained. Psychological experiments have shown it is easy to for us to misinterpret our own physiological symptoms in different contexts. Considering Twilight’s anxiety and awkwardness in her current situation, and what that usually entails also tending to be the same symptoms as being twitter-pattered, it’s not too surprising actually if she forms a slight crush *shrug*. If crossing over a giant bridge by rickety-bridge is enough to cause this effect, turning species with the fate of the world on your head probably will too XD.
Still though, I honestly don’t care if Twilight just gets a little fluttering of the heart now and then. People have small crushes, or get a little flustered around someone who seems attractive for some reason or another, all the time.
Wondercolts = Wonderbolts. Heh.
Flash mob musical number working to unite everyone and overcome their differences and just be theirselves….wasn’t that in High School Musical? Anyway, the song itself is okay but nothing particularly memorable, though I guess the choreography was good? Not much of an expert on that sort of thing so… Main lesson; don’t underestimate the power of a flash mob.
Principal Luna is best interrogator.
Pinkie Pie apparently figures out the plot of the movie, Spike confirms. Well, that works I guess. The group reacts rather quickly and friendly. Then again, their equivalents were pretty quick to accept Twilicorn so I guess it’s in their character…
Clean up and repair montage encourages whole school to come together to prepare for the ball. Again, not anything I’ll probably be particularly remembering. Immediately followed by clothing montage…I’ll just say it; I prefer Art of the Dress XD. And I guess the dress designs aren’t too bad; particularly liked Fluttershy’s and Rarity’s.
Twilight accepts Flash’s asking her to the ball. This seems to be the extent of the love interest portion of the whole thing. I don’t see anything getting worked up about *shrug*.
Trixie really seems to like her peanut cracker snacks…
Big Thoughts: Okay, I can see how some people think Twilight’s refusing Sunset Shimmer’s deal could have been drawn out a bit, maybe with some flashbacks to her friends. I don’t really, but I could see how others (I’m not big on flashbacks for the sake of flashbacks, and by now we already know how important her friends are so no need to reaffirm that…). I actually find this a rather big moment for Twilight since it seems to show she has a mindset that she’s willing to put the needs of others above her own (giving up the chance to see her friends if it means protecting this world from Sunset Shimmer’s cruelty). It’s a generally accepted, if occasionally arguable, mindset for someone who wants to be a leader. Now consider that Twilight was worried about whether or not she could be a good leader back at the start of the movie…
Big Thoughts: “She’s so very special.” I don’t know what it is, but the way Sunset Shimmer said makes me feel as if there might have been some potential for a backstory there that I hope fans would be willing to explore. Furthermore, the face she makes during her own transformation reminds me a bit of Majora’s Mask transformation scenes with the look of terror on it. We already know of corrupted artifacts causing ponies to go crazy (Alicorn Amulet). I wonder if Sunset Shimmer is, in a sense, similar to Trixie in that yeah, she has her moments of negativity (Trixie being egotistical, Sunset being cruel and manipulative), but they aren’t bad. She does state when she orders Snips and Snails to let go of Spike that “she’s not a monster”… Might be looking into it too much though….
Wilhelm Scream is best scream.
I have to state I actually really like the design and effects of the magic Sunset Shimmer-demon is using.
Big Thoughts: Okay, not sure if the pony transformations to use the Elements of Harmony was necessary. Then again, it is magic originating from Equestria, so if it’s simply attempting to channel the magic across dimensions or something that might explain it? Might make for some good metaphysical headcanon…The fact the magic was usable is fine to me of course. I mean, it is Friendship is Magic, we know from “Hearts Warming Eve” the magic is capable without the elements; the Element of Magic being there probably helped to channel it into a useable form. *is just making this stuff up as he goes*
Oh, and to quote Nostalgia Critic: TASTE THE RAINBOW MOTHERF*****
Dang, that really leaves a big hole…
Big Thoughts: Yeah, Sunset Shimmer’s redemption was a little fast, though I guess if you go with the idea she wasn’t completely evil and the magic corrupted her then it’s a little more plausible. Of course Luna was instantly regretful and sorry after she got blasted by rainbows so honestly, this should be pretty standard for Equestrian villains by now. The more interesting thing, however, was Twilight pointing out that the others could offer to help Sunset Shimmer learn about friendship. This means, in part, that theoretically you could have Sunset Shimmer be the protagonist of an Equestrian Girls spinoff, as she adjusts from her cruel and manipulative self to a better pony with the help of her new friends.
…and I’d totally watch that. Seriously, watching a former antagonist slowly develop into a better person? How could that not be interesting?
EQ Pinkie Pie tries to run into portal; portal says no. I shall theorize it’s not because of time running out, but because the portal realizes no world is ready for TWO Pinkie Pies to exist in one spot. And not clone Pinkie Pies, but actual fully fleshed out ones. Seriously, that’s world-ending right there.
Big Thought: And we get some joking at Twilight’s expense about crushing on the pony Flash Sentry. Since this completes the whole love interest portion of the movie, I have to say…I’m disappointed. Not because they introduced one: I’m neutral to supportive on romance plots generally. I’m more disappointed more because it didn’t get explored more. That’s probably because I’m of the opinion “if you’re going to introduce a plot element, use it.” As it stands, such tepid use of it just makes the subplot seem thrown in just because *shrug*. The fact that writers are stating he won’t be in Season 4 just makes it more annoying =P.
Also, Twilight + Flash Sentry = FlashLight is one of the funniest ship-names I’ve ever seen.
Credits: Again, “meh” song. Has Derpy dancing with a muffin though so there’s that.
[/spoiler]Remix of opening was okay (not exactly my style), but I absolutely adore the animation during the song.
