As a general rule, Derpy is usually a very kind, sweet, and gentle pony. At times this can give a sense of her being innocent and childlike, and to some degree it’s true. She is pleased by the simple things in life, appreciating even something as simple as bubbles floating in the air. At other times she can also be a bit distracted and can sometimes miss the obvious or jump to odd conclusions that make her daughter call her “silly.” Complementing the innocence and silliness, however, is Derpy's sincerity and genuine want to help others with all the enthusiasm she can muster. At times, however, this wanting to try and help others means she’ll often place them above herself, causing her to bottle up some of her own emotions for the sake of others. This goes double for any interactions with her daughter, who Derpy refuses to show off any signs of stress in front of.
Furthermore, Derpy is generally a very trusting pony. She generally prefers to see the good in ponies, including some of the worst behaved or meanest ponies. Because of this she’s often very friendly towards everypony and, more importantly, generally doesn’t have a judgmental bone in her body. If anything, she might blame herself for a problem than somepony else on most kind of topics (her eyes and her daughter are an exception). Because of this she has a tendency to want to try and fix whatever it was that she messed up and assumes a lot of responsibility. Of course the amount of enthusiasm she throws into everything can sometimes just make things worse. Her good nature, however, can often make her a natural peacemaker.
Derpy is very well aware that her eyes aren’t exactly straight-forward looking. She knows she can be a bit clumsy if she’s not paying attention and is also aware that she sometimes struggles with flying. This tends to get worse when she’s particularly stressed out or anxious and can’t concentrate. While she’s learned to live with it, she can at times still be a little sensitive about it when other ponies tease her or she messes up because of them. Still, since she’s grown up with it, she’s learned to be able to let most small comments slide, and is perfectly okay if somepony just accidentally says something.
As Ponyville’s resident mailmare, she knows everypony in town, where they live, and the contents of their mailbox. She has a great memory for documents and maps, which is quite handy when her eyesight doesn’t want to work right. Usually this requires effort on her part, but even when not trying to she can casually get a lot of details memorized. She also has a very good sense of direction.
If there is something she is more proud of than her work, however, it’s her daughter Dinky. Despite some of the looks ponies give her for being such a young mother, Derpy absolutely adores her daughter to death. If mothers are supposed to think the world of their daughter, Derpy thinks the universe and several adjacent ones. So if you want to get on Derpy’s very narrow bad side, then even thinking of harming her daughter will be the quickest way to it. She is very supportive of her daughter, but sometimes feels like she may not be the best mother for her because of her clumsiness or being a pegasi when her daughter’s a unicorn. Despite this, she wouldn’t trade Dinky for anything in the universe. Of course this often means lots of embarrassing displays of affection and a bit of an overprotective streak.
#History ;*History influenced by a prior Derpy's history
Derpy Hooves was born to a pair of pegasi parents who lived happily in Cloudsdale. Despite being born with a pair of crossed eyes, her parents loved her dearly (being the only child didn’t hurt matters either). Of course raising Derpy was kind of difficult; her condition meant it took longer for her to pass milestones such as walking and flying, and bills for replacing broken objects were a bit higher than a normal child. Still, despite the problems, her parents were there for her, often with a freshly baked muffin.
All this support was especially helpful for her when she started going to school, both normal and flight. Because of her clumsiness and general attitude the other foals would constantly tease her. The main way she was able to get through the teasing was her parent’s constant love and support, which helped sustain her confidence and self-esteem through these formative years. Still, even the highest self-esteem takes a few blows when under constant attack, and to this day Derpy still retains some of the submissive tendencies she used as a way to get out of trouble. Relative to other ponies she knew, however, Derpy generally got through okay. Especially after the day she gained her cutie mark.
It was during one of her repeat years at flight school - eyes meant she had a lot of trouble and was held back - when everything happened. It was a test about precision and carefulness, with the goal to transport some figurines across the field with minimal amount of bumpiness. Of course, everypony was already expecting Derpy to fail, with some of the other students teasing her beforehand. Fortunately for Derpy, the tendency for the other ponies to be brash speed-freaks meant they were the ones to send things falling to the ground. Derpy didn’t expect to do any better, but when the figurines were placed on her she closed her eyes. Her wings twitched a little at the currents, which were particularly strong that day. Slowly but surely she moved, eyes still closed, and feeling out for those currents that would give her just enough to move but not cause the things to fall off.
She didn’t win any speed records that day, but she made it. More importantly, the success in doing so gained her a cutie mark, the bubbles representing how when she put her mind to it she could sense even the smallest, most delicate of things without breaking them. Of course she still ended up near the bottom of the class that year, alongside another mare named Fluttershy, but she graduated at least!
Eventually adulthood came. With her disinterest in flight and weather despite her skills with air currents, Derpy decided to join Fluttershy in moving to the ground in Ponyville. It took some time before she could get a steady job; anxiety, loneliness, and getting yelled at meant she would often fall into her clumsy patterns. It wasn’t until she secured a job at the Ponyville Post Office as a mailmare that she got a steady income. Her boss was nice and understanding, and being able to calm down meant she could take advantage of her sense for air currents to deliver even fragile packages safely. Still, whenever she got startled or something was on her mind, she still messed up, but was usually forgiven.
It was during one of these mess ups that she met Dinky’s father. She had snagged her bag on a branch, spilling out letters everywhere. He had happened to be nearby, and soon he was graciously helping her pick everything up with a good sense of humor about it. Over the next several weeks the two would chat and hang out every time she came to deliver his mail, and eventually the two started to date. Everything was going good in Derpy’s life, and the two became rather close until one thing lead to another and then…
When she told him the news about her pregnancy, he initially appeared excited. When the permanent change of address form came into the office, she thought maybe he had found a new job somewhere. When her letters to him never, ever got responded to, Derpy realized he had run off, apparently afraid of the commitment that staying with her and raising a child would be. The next few months were probably the hardest in Derpy’s life; teasing about her eyes didn’t mean squat compared to being abandoned. But to this day Derpy never regrets the day her daughter was born; it was the shining light of the whole situation.
The next several years of taking care of and raising Dinky brought Derpy back to her natural state of joy and optimism. It was hard of course; steady or not, mailmare was not exactly a high paying job. And since her daughter was a unicorn, Derpy has to let her go sometimes to get special training for her magic. But still, Derpy is ready for the future, whatever it brings. The Roleplayer's Corner

It was the middle of the afternoon. School was letting out, but most importantly for Derpy it meant that the last of the letters were delivered and she could head off to the schoolhouse to pick up her daughter. As usual, she was still in her uniform; she usually didn’t get a chance to change until she took Dinky home. She still had her bag with her as well, but instead of letters and packages she had swung by Sugar Cube Corner to pick up some small muffins for a snack. They were going to need the energy later since Derpy was going to need Dinky’s help with some stuff.
Because of their busy schedules, cleaning had been sort of neglected around the house. Since it was the weekend, however, they were finally free to start trying to make it up. Nothing too big; just sweeping, dusting, wiping down counters, laundry. The house wasn’t that big so it didn’t take too long. Derpy just really didn’t like dragging her daughter into it though; she wanted her to have time to play with friends. But if the stuff didn’t get done soon, it would eat up into the weekend. More importantly, however, Dinky was still grounded after running off to the Crystal Empire with her friends. Derpy was ready to take down Sombra herself when she found out the news. It had been sometime since the whole fiasco, and at some level Derpy was loosening the restriction. But Dinky still had a lot of chores worth of stuff to make up for making her mother worried as Tartarus.
And so she sat outside, slightly early for the school bell, waiting patiently for her little muffin to come running out with all the other kids.
