It was an intense moment as Fluttershy waited to see how Rarity would react to what she had said. Maybe this was all she had needed to do. She just needed her friend to realize what was happening. The pegasus nodded enthusiastically as her friend seemed to take her words to heart. But things started to get really weird again.
Fluttershy sealed her eyes shut, squeaked and reared up into the rampant and kicked as the world changed around her. When her eyes were finally reopened and her hooves all back on the ground, she found herself back where she had been before. She had no idea what she should say to the voice. It seemed she had done the right thing, but honestly it was difficult to really feel like things were in fact going great.
It was all so strange and she just wanted it to be over. She slowly dragged herself over to a new door, opening it quickly and hopping in. She had to go into all of them and she accepted that, but she wasn't about to swagger in like a champion.
As Fluttershy walked through the door, the room fell away around her once again, being replaced by a large expanse of dark tunnels. The only light in the room was coming from odd looking lamps hanging in the walls every 50 or so feet. These lamps, instead of burning a candle to create light, just had a glowing red gem, giving off an eery glow to the hallways.
After a few moments, rapid hoofsteps started echoing through the area. A whimper and a short, rapid breath came shortly after. And soon, a White unicorn with a Purple mane ran down the hallway. Her mane was a mess, dirt was everywhere on her mane, and there was what seemed to be a caked mud around her mid-section. She ran and ran, the sounds of large paws coming from behind her never grew louder and never ceased. No bodies were attached to the noise.
The unicorn tripped, trying to stop herself as footsteps seemed to be coming from the other direction as well. She slumped down in a heap, covering her ears as she cried out in fear at the hooves of the yellow Pegasus. After a short investigation, Fluttershy would notice some gems poking out of various spots in the walls, catching and reflecting the light from the torches, as well as distinct clawmarks all over. She was in a Diamond Dog Tunnel!
Oh good, it was Fluttershy's old friend, the dark. She bent low to the ground, squinting to try to use the light ahead of her as best she could. It was then that she noticed the red gems, ones not unlike the shattered gems she had seen last time. When she accomplished her goal here, would all the light go away? Then again, last time, she had been taken out of the door once the task was accomplished, so no reason to worry, right?
Her knees were shaking from the start, but the sound of hoofsteps caused her to brace up against the wall as she looked around frantically for their source. In time, the source became clear. While disheleved, she looked like a regular unicorn. But before Fluttershy could muster up the courage to move or speak, she heard the other sounds, the ones that were not made by pony movement.
The scene unfolded before her quickly and the mystery pony had tripped close by, startled by Fluttershy, which seemed ironic to the animal caretaker, who was at least just as frightened. Shivering as she looked between the injured pony and the direction she came from, she finally spoke up, her voice quiet and soft, ”Um excuse me, but is someone after you and um... You look like you may be hurt, so I'm wondering if maybe we should keep running, if you're up for it and if not maybe we can... Oh dear...”
The messy, unkempt mane on the pony shifted a bit as she moved. She turned slowly, her eyes wide in horror. Blue eyes, dark around the eyelids from what seems to be running eyeliner. The eyes locked onto Fluttershys face, a few silent syllables crossing the unicorns mouth before she was able to formulate any coherent comments.
"F-fluttershy? D-diamond dogs. Save me!" Rarity choked out as she heard more footsteps in the hall. Her eyes widened even further, as if the eyes were going to fall out of her head. She let out another yelp of fear and hid behind the yellow pegasus. "T-they're going... going to hurt me a-again." Rarity whimpered, trying to back away from the main hallway as much as she could, her back pressed solidly against the wall.
If Fluttershy believed there were Diamond Dogs, the footsteps would remain, fixed on their volume, never growing closer of farther. If she didn't, all Fluttershy would hear is a deafening Silence, broken only by Raritys fearful gasps.
When the white pony looked up at her, Fluttershy finally realized who it was. And not only was she being persued, it was apparently by Diamond Dogs! And Rarity thought she'd be able to protect her! This was not traditionally one of her skill sets, as she did much of her best work outside of conflict and hidden from that which might cause her harm.
Her back legs began to feel watery as Rarity said they might hurt her again. ”Oh um.. I'll do my best,” she said as bravely as she could. She would have preferred to attempt to keep running, but with her own body starting to fail her and Rarity not being in good shape, it didn't seem like the best idea. Maybe there was something she could do here. She doubted it would be as easy as just telling this new Rarity that it wasn't real, this one came with a more clear challenge.
She swallowed hard, fully believing in her friend and what she said. Thus, the footsteps continued at their same volume. After waiting for a short time, Fluttershy's heart could scarcely take beating at its current intensity for any longer. ”Excuse me... they were right behind you, right?”
Rarity looked at Fluttershy with her pleading eyes. Then the Pegasus agreed to protect her. Rarity squeezed the pegasus in a tight hug, as if Fluttershy had just given her the entire world. It was as if those words were the best words that could ever be spoken.
Rarity hid behind the pegasus, becoming as small and inconspicuous as she could. Then Fluttershy questioned about the location of the Diamond Dogs. Rarity looked up at her and nodded, looking around. "Of course! Can't you hear them? They're getting closer!" The footsteps were, in fact, now getting closer.
After a few tense moments, three figures rounded the corner, moving through the tunnel slowly. They didn't really look like Diamond Dogs as you would imagine them. These things were tall, grotesque, twisted abominations that vaguely resembled Diamond Dogs. "Where is Pony?" Ones voice rumbled, looking to Fluttershy. "Pony needs to help us DIG." Rarity let out a quiet whimper behind the Pegasus, but the Diamond Dogs didn't seem to notice her.
Fluttershy's hesitant response was met with a lot more zeal than it had contained. One would almost think she was a well known protector of ponies from the way Rarity treated her. Generally, this was not the case. Much more often that she needed protecting than that she did any protecting.
Now that she mentioned it, the sounds had grown more distinct, as if someone was about to arrive. Had she misheard before? ”Oh, of course, my mistake, sorry,” she apologized before realizing what that meant.
During the time it had seemed as if no one was actually coming, Fluttershy had calmed down a bit, but now danger was on its way again.
While the average Diamond Dog was imposing, these were in a league of their own. The strength that remained within her began to ebb away from her as they began making demands. ”W-well you see... She would rather not and you really should respect that...” Fluttershy replied, growing progressively more quiet. C'mon, this is for Rarity!

The large, mutated looking dog stared down at Fluttershy baring teeth that looked more like gnarled dragon claws than actual teeth. Teeth that fit in a mouth that looked big enough to swallow Fluttershy whole. "Pony doesn't WANT TO?" the dog scoffed, sniffing the air. "Pony is close. Find her." the other two dogs rushed off in opposite directions, sniffing and looking for Rarity as the dog looked back down to Fluttershy.
"Tell me, other pony. Why does Pony no want to work for Dog?" It asked, judging the pegasus, leaning in close so its horrid breath ruffled Flutterhsy's mane. Rarity whimpered again, scooting back away from the dog, keeping Fluttershy between the two of them. Her eyes were super wide, obviously scared out of her mind. "Tell Dog why Pony no want to Work."
Fluttershy stared at the bared teeth, almost hypnotized in fear of them. She had never seen such big teeth on a natural Diamond Dog, but then, nothing about this lot was normal. All much scarier versions of the already intimidating truth.
The pegasus squinted an eye shut as the acrid breath nauseated her sense of smell. For a dream world, her senses were fully engaged.
Fluttershy began to feel something else well within her as the horrific Diamond Dog pressed the issue. The familiar sensation that came before she turned fright into a more aggressive emotion. It grew, but she didn't snap quite yet. ”She doesn't want to because that's not who she is. She isn't some servant that wants to mine all day. She's meant to be out here, designing the next new big hit, not stuck in some nightmare...” Her frustration with herself added further fuel to what was to come if the Diamond Dog kept going.
The Diamond Dog let out a long breath, his breath making the air around Fluttershy sour. However, the Dog took a step back, sizing up the pony. "But, we needs her. She finds Gemses. Wifout Gemses, we are not Diamond Dogs. We's just Dogs." The dog seemed a bit smaller, almost sad.
Rarity shifted behind Fluttershy, gazing past the yellow pegasus at the diamond dog. "I never thought of it like that. If they can't find gems... I'm taking that away from them. I should stay, shouldn't I." She said, getting ready to stand up and walk toward them, unless the yellow 'sus stops her.
Fluttershy’s emotional trajectory was changed by the explanation of the Diamond Dogs and Rarity’s seeming desire to give in. This didn’t seem right at all. They had some logic to what they were saying. Rarity’s gift could help them fulfill their goals. But just because she could help them, didn’t mean she had to help them. Oh but that sounded bad. It sounded like Rarity would have to be selfish in order to not stay and do their bidding just because they were a group. This was all so complicated. She knew it was all wrong, but not how to say it.
”No I don’t think that’s… Rarity I mean that I believe you should… Hnnn… Rarity-I-think-you-could-make-them-happier-by-staying-but-you-make-a-lot-of-ponies-happy-by-not-staying!” she attempted, her words coming out in a heap from nerves. ”What I mean is, you can make yourself and others happy above ground and you can do it your way. So that’s where I think you should go. The Diamond Dogs have been Diamond Dogs for longer than you’ve been alive, they’re strong enough to find their own way… But I need you back home, I’m not strong enough to not have you around...” Yet the longer this went on, the less she believed that she could actually save Rarity at all...
As Fluttershy spoke more and more, the dog in front of her shrank. Eventually, becoming the size of a mouse. When Fluttershy said she wasn't strong enough to not have Rarity around, the Dog seemed to fade away, leaving behind a red gem that slowly fell to the ground, dissipating.
"Y-you mean that?" The voice came from seemingly everywhere, not from the Rarity in front of the yellow Pegasus. The voice was deep, like the Nightmare form in the foyer of this imagined world. The scene around them faded, the third brazier being lit in the foyer as the Nightmare Rarity stood in front of Fluttershy. "Then Join me, Fluttershy. Together, we can make this world a beautiful place. One where Poverty and greed wont exist. One where everyone will be happy, and no one will fall from grace." Rarity said, her voice sounded like her normal self again, but the body was still dark and Nightmarish.
The Unicorns horn flickered, a wisping energy floating around the Pegasus. A Mirror appeared next to the two, and Rarity urged Fluttershy to look at what she could become, and what power she could wield. The Pegasus was sat in the middle of a field, her animal friends all about her, and ponies happily moving alongside the animals. "This is the world that could be ours, Dear Fluttershy. Join me." The Nightmare Rarity urged her again.
The gruesome canines disappeared, but there was once again little time to feel relief. One step closer to helping one of her best friends. But the danger made sure it wasn’t forgotten.
Fluttershy anxiously picked up her hooves as the mist moved around her, trying to keep the fog from touching her without considering that she could attempt to fly above it. But the vapor was soon forgotten and her eyes were trained on the mirror, only looking away for a moment to see if the reflection had taken hold on the real her. Yet outside of the mirror, she saw only her usual coloring and she was quickly back to looking at the vision within the dream glass.
It seemed nice, it seemed like harmony. It was harmony. She had seen this nightmarish version of Rarity as a corrupted version of her friend, but this wasn’t evil. Her ambitions seemed nice. As far as the scene stretched, it was the type of world that Fluttershy would enjoy living in.
She hung her head and forced herself not to look back at the tempting image in front of her.
”Rarity it’s beautiful... And it’s nice of you to offer, but I have to say no,” she replied, already well beyond the usual amount of words that she would speak in a day. ”I can’t stop trying to bring you back, no matter what.”
Rarity looked at Fluttershy. A look of Disbelief on her face. "You... You went through all of these tests for me. You said you can't be without me... and yet, you decline my gifts?" She said, a slight growl to her voice. Her horn flared again, a light wrapping around Fluttershy one more time.
The light dissipated as quickly as it appeared as three red gems floated up around Fluttershy. Rarity blinked at these, trying the spell one more time, the spell was quickly pulled into one of the gems while the other two caused a light to stream back at Rarity, her color slowly fading back to white before she was pushed back through the final, unopened door in the lobby. A light flickered to light on the door as it remained opened for Fluttershy, a wave of calm and kindness radiating from it.
Fluttershy opened the eyes she didn’t remember closing as the nightmare-altered Rarity’s spell never took hold on her. Relieved, but not relaxed, Fluttershy looked at the gems above her and watched as her friend shifted back to her more natural form and was then spirited away. Three gems where there had been four. If there were truly rules at play, she only had to endure a little longer. Though, there was no telling what would happen once the final gem was accounted for. All she had to assure her was hope and the drive that burned long after fatigue had set in. Motivation from the love she had for the unicorn.
”Almost there,” she whispered, unsure of whether it was for herself or in some belief that Rarity could hear it. ”So very soon you’ll be safe and I’ll be safe and we’ll be safe together. Me and you, doing whatever you want until you’re all better…”
She stared ahead and pressed forward, moving to the door and going through. As nice as the vision had been before, something about this door seemed just as potent, but on a different level, some… undefined sense making her feel like it wouldn’t be so bad. Her hope was strong, but so was fear.
