Quill listens with a smile on her face as her "new" friend speaks. At the (rather accurate) guess the unicorn takes, the injured young filly giggles and smiles sheepishly. "He makes it look so easy, you know?" She waves her undamaged wing. "But I forgot my wings are too small to do anything." The frown that crosses her face is brief, erased by a look of curiosity.
"So how many siblings do you have? How many are unicorns? Are you the only one? Is one of your parents a unicorn? Everypony in my family is a pegasus. Mom and Dad aren't that interested in flying, though."
Fox grinned as she looked down at her feet, remembering what it was like to be so small. "My mom's a unicorn and dad's a pegasus. My oldest brother Diamond is a pegasus, while Frost is a unicorn, so's my little brother Shadow. Misty's a pegasus but she's got wings so small she can only run really fast by flapping them. My new little brothers another pegasus so that'll prbably be more trouble".
She smiled as she noted that Misty wasn't even born when Fox was actually the size she was. "Your wings will grow out eventually".
Quill listens intently as Fox describes her family, stowing the information away somewhere in her small head. She's a little amazed by the size of Fox's family. She can't even imagine having so many siblings! Though if they were all like Pi, she didn't think she'd mind all that much. She does kind of wonder what it would be like to have a unicorn sibling, though. That would probably mean they'd end up living on the ground instead of in Cloudsdale, though. She wonders what that's like.
She's quiet for a long moment before she asks in a curious tone, "Can you do magic yet?"
Fox grinned. "I can lift things, mostly books but I'm working on bigger things". She looked at the top pillow on the bed she was sitting on and concentrated, her horn glowing a little as she concentrated on lifting the pillowup.
The pillow started to glow but steadfastly refused to move as Fox concentrated, then it moved jerkily upwards. Fox was so busy concentrating on lifting it that it took a moment to remember that she could life objects about twice it's size. That broke her concentration enough that the pillow dropped back down again.
Fox glanced at Quill. "That's about all I can do".
The young filly nods thoughtfully, her serious expression seeming out of place on her young face. She remains silent for several moments before her curiosity bursts again.
"What does magic feel like?" As a pegasus, Quill has never really understood magic, though she is insanely curious about it. What are its limits? Does it even have limits? Could it do anything if used properly? She knew the Princesses could use it to raise the sun and moon, and those were huge. So magic had to be pretty powerful, right? But everypony couldn't be that powerful. There were probably limits for normal ponies. Did all unicorns learn levitation? Was it possible for somepony's special talent to be magic? If so, would they still be weaker than the Princesses, or could they reach that level? Was raising the sun just levitation or was it a different spell? Though she had many questions, she realized that somepony her age probably wouldn't know all the answers. She wished she knew an adult unicorn, so that she could ask them.
Fox smiled as she pondered Quill's question. "Magic is hard to explain. I'm no expert, my magic pretty much extends to moving thngs and that's about all. The feeling when I'm using it is like I can feel what I'm lifting without feeling it". She frowned as she realised it was a little odd sounding. "Say I'm rearranging some books at home. If I spend too long moving things with magic I'll feel as tired as I would have if I physically moved them around".
Quill nods and stares at the ceiling, thinking about magic. She thinks about making stars appear at night like Princess Luna. She thinks about lifting a pencil, a chair, an entire house. She thinks about using magic to fly like her brother does. Then she thinks she will never do these things. Surprisingly, she finds she is okay with that, though she doesn't understand why. So after moments of silence, she turns to Fox Fire with a smile.
"That sounds cool! D'you wanna know how pegasi make the weather? I took a tour of the factory once!" There are many things Quill could tell her "new" friend about, but she had no reason to believe Fox doesn't already know them. Except for pegasus stuff, of course.
Fox smiled as she realised that she had no idea how Pegasuses made the weather. "Hold on a second". She dropped off the bed she was sitting on and trotted over to the bed Quill was on before clambering onto it and sitring on the far end of the bed from where Quill was,
Positioning herself to hopefully not cause Quill any discomfort, Fox sat facing Quill and smiled, her smile turning momentarily into a frown as she looked back and noticed one thing. Did I really have such a big flank when I was a filly? Discounting that thought, Fox smiled as she noted Quill seemed to be less down than she had been. "Tell me more".
The little pegasus filly's smile turns to a beam. Even at such a young age, she is always pleased to share information with other ponies. "Well," she begins, pausing only slightly to gather her thoughts. "The first place they took us was the snowflake room. We weren't allowed to fly at all, 'cause the wind from our wings might blow the snowflakes around! They were all made by hoof, under these big magnifying things." Quill gestures with her free hoof in wide, vague motions, which do little to clarify her speech and serve only to emphasize the fact that she is an excited filly.
"Then they showed us the rainbows, and I don't know if you've ever seen pictures or anything, but Cloudsdale has like, rivers of rainbow near the factory and it's really cool! The guide told us not to taste it but I did anyway and it was really spicy." The grey filly makes a face. "I don't think I liked it all that much," she adds, as if her wrinkled nose weren't proof enough of this.
"After that was...um..." Quill frowns as she tries to remember what happened next. "Oh! We went to see the cloud machines and it was so cool! They dumped buckets of water in the top and then it made a noise and then WHOOSH!" She throws her hoof up, bouncing a bit on the bed. "Clouds came out!"
"I don't think they showed us how they make thunder clouds, though." The filly thinks for a moment. "You know, I think the Weather Factory is probably the best part of Cloudsdale. It's definitely the most fun."
Fox laughed as she pondered Quill's comment. "I see what you mean. I've wondered what it's like to fly before, making the weather just seems to make it more fun". She smiled. "I guess it's a case of you always want what you can't get". She glanced at Quill. "Pegasuses get to fly and Unicorns getto do magic" She grinned. "When my mummy tells me how to do more than lift pillows".
Fox smiled to herself when she remembered how frustrated she was at the age she looked that she could only lift small objects. "I want to be able lift bigger things. Then I want to be a explorer and find stuff no-one else has seen for years"
She grinned as she realied she had changed less over the years than she had thought.
Quill's eyes widen almost comically. "An explorer? That's so cool!" One can practically see the stars in her eyes as she looks at Fox Fire in wonder. "I read a lot of books about explorers. And adventurers. Like Daring Do! She's so amazing! Have you read any of her stories? There was this one where she had to like, get this super special magic statue, but the bad guy, Ahuizotl--" She pronounces the name like Ah-wee-zoh-tul, stumbling over it a bit as she isn't sure how it's supposed to be said. "--he wants the statue too! So he sends in his cats and they attack Daring!" The little pegasus stops, as if having realized something. "Oh, wait, but if I tell you it'll spoil it..." A sheepish glance at her friends. "Sorry about that, I got a little carried away, huh?"
The grey filly is silent for a moment before she speaks again. "I don't think I could ever be an explorer. I like to read about them, and..." She pauses, biting her lip. "And I think I'd really like to write about them. I think I could be a good writer, with pracice..." Suddenly, a beaming smile is directed at the unicorn filly beside her.
"I might not be much like Daring Do, but I can be just like A.K. Yearling! You'll see!"
Fox smiled at Quill's enthusiasm. She had read all the Daring Do novels but was trying to remember how many of the novels were out at the time she guessed this Quill was from. She grinned as she scooched further up the bed and, carefully trying to avoid hurting Quill, hugged her one-hoofed to avoid hurting her wounded wing.
She used her other hoof to life Quill's face up so that she was looking her in the eyes. "Listen to me Quill, if you want to be the next A.K Yearling do it. Don't let anypony, even your parents, try and stop you".She grinned. "Besides, when I become a great explorer I'll need somepony to write my life story".
Quill beams at Fox, ecstatic at the idea of a future partnership. She could just see it: A much taller Fox Fire stepping into Quill's Quills (the filly wasn't quite sure why she imagined herself running a quill shop) after yet another successful quest and telling her all about it. She could see it vividly, and it made her quite happy. And best of all, it meant somepony believed in her.
Suddenly, as had happened several times before, the proverbial screen turns grey, obscuring everything. As the effect fades, Quill finds herself on a vaguely familiar rooftop. She is her normal age again, or perhaps a bit older as she feels much taller. Beside her is a pony who she recognizes as her friend Fox Fire, although she cannot recall how exactly she knows this pony. After quickly analyzing the situation, she realized that there are also other ponies behind them, who don't seem terribly friendly. The air around them is cold and damp, and wind whips betwixt them. It's dark, but not night--something unidentifiable is covering the sun.
She turns to face the strange ponies cautiously, unsure of their intentions. They give off a strange vibe--not a bad one, but not a good one either. She has the impression that they're almost...sacred, she wants to call it. They feel like sacred ponies.
There are three of them, standing identical and strangely still. Black coats, white manes, and silver eyes. It's nearly impossible to distinguish gender. They are unnaturally tall, and all three are pegasi with rather large wings. Quill finds them a bit intimidating.
Fox took in the new situation and smiled before hugging Quill. "Are you okay, Quill?" She looked at the new ponies, unsure of what to think. There was something about them which Fox found disconcerting for some reason, although she suspected the general ambiance was probably not helping.
Fox walked a little closer to the three pegasuseses and smiled nervously. "Hello, I'm Fox, this is my friend Quill. If you don't mind me asking, who are you?".
Despite Fox Fire's friendly approach, the strange ponies don't move. Quill shifts her weight, starting to feel uneasy. She doesn't know who they are or what they want, nor does she know why they're on a roof. The wind whips her mane into her eyes and she backs up a step, then another.
But the ponies just stand there, staring straight forward, and she gets the worst hunch that they're waiting for her to speak. So she straightens herself and stands as tall as she can and wills her voice not to crack.
"Who are you?" She echos her friend's question and attempts to put more force behind it, though she thinks she's rather unsuccessful. The middle pony's eyes snap to the pair of teenagers and they step with a stiffness in their knees. All three open their mouths and speak and words flow forth with a hundred voices.
"We are that. Which controls the sky." Their speech is strange, even besides the multiplied voices. They pause in unnatural places, and their mouths don't move to form the words. "See the dark. Know the dark. We are that. Which controls the sky." It sends a shiver down the young pegasus's spine and she has a primal urge to spread her wings and fly. While they still don't feel evil, she wants to get as far away from them as she possibly can. But the need fades quickly as the three ponies suddenly shift their attention to Fox Fire.
