#Personality: Nya is a very clever and resourceful little Zebra. How she managed to get to Equestria all on her own is a mystery, as is her purpose for coming here at all. But the little foal is extremely stubborn and refuses to say anything about the hows and whys except "I'm not here to make trouble!" to whomever might ask, even if that person were Princess Celestia herself. She knows, or suspects, that as long as she doesn't tell them anything about herself, they wont know where or how to send her back. And she has no hesitation at all about playing her youth or small, scrawny size to her advantage if she thinks she has a sympathetic listener and something to gain.
On a more positive note, Nyarai is very curious and imaginative, interested in everypony and ready to jump in and try everything right away! She has a very active imagination and a good memory, and likes to entertain people with songs, stories, and dancing. But her eagerness to try everything comes with the downside of dozens of abandoned and half-finished projects left in her wake. And like many foals with big imaginations, fact and fiction are less distinct than they would be to an older, wiser pony. When the little zebra does outright lie, there's usually one of two motives behind it- Self preservation, or the entertainment of her listener.
#History: When Equestrians think of Zebras, they generally think of Zecora. This is quite understandable, as she has been the only Zebra most of them ever saw. But Nyarai comes from a different herd. Her people have a culture a little more Egyptian-themed. They put tribal tattoos on the shoulder, rather than the rump, and their stripes are a little different.
Born among these Zebra, Nyarai had a reasonably good foal hood. She played with other zebra her age, she loved her parents and showed every promise of growing up happy and healthy. That isn't to say it was all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows- there were hungry seasons, where everything dried up, crumbled into dust and blew away on a hot dry wind. There were seasons where it would rain and rain and rain without stopping, and people would get sick from the damp and the cold. But those were grown-up worries. Nyarai spent her days playing and exploring her world.
Nya doesn't remember, or she says she doesn't remember- too much about where her people lived or what they were called. Geography was a topic of study for the wise, not little foals. For foals, the world was only as big as the area you'd explored. But one day, a very bad decision ended up pushing the borders of her world much farther than she ever dreamed they could go.
She had come across a few very strange stripeless Zebra and was spying on them from the safety of a bush. They wore strange clothes and they all looked very different. One of them had wings. Wings! on a zebra! How silly! another had a horn, like a rhinoceros, except on the forehead. While less silly than having a pair of wings, it still seemed pretty weird. The other was the most like a zebra, but still stripeless. They had set up camp in the open and were arguing over a peice of paper. The plain zebra wanted to go to the river- At least, Nya thought so, he kept pointing in that direction- and the mutant zebras wanted to go into the jungle. Eventually, the plain one had to give in, and they went off, leaving their camp half packed up and at the mercy of a curious little Zebra.
Nyarai poked her nose into every barrel, into every crate, into every bag that had been left behind. Everything was picked up, played with, tasted, smelled, and sometimes broken. Even by her tribe's standards she was being rude, but her curiosity could not be contained. Eventually she hit the jackpot- a crate FULL of cookies! She didn't know what they were at first, but as soon as she had put one in her mouth, she knew it was food. She climbed into the crate and ate as many as she could stuff in, before falling asleep, not even bothering to waddle off back to the bush.
What happened next was never very clear to her- She woke up, but it appeared to be night. There was a great deal of noise going on around her, but in a muffled sort of way. She suspected that the season of rains had begin and that they- the strange Zebra- must have put the lid back on the box to keep the rain out. She was not particularly distressed about her situation, because there were still lots of cookies left. She stuffed herself full a second time, and went back to sleep.
While she was sleeping, the ponies, who had been planning on a tour of exploration, had been distressed by the early start of the rainy season. The earth pony had wanted to head back by the river to the ship right away, the other two had wanted to explore. Although they had managed to explore a little, the sudden downpour had sent them scurrying back to their camp. Finding it in shambles, they had to throw everything back together in a hurry, and it was in this confusion that Nyarai had been overlooked.
In fact, it was not until they had traveled back to their ship and disembarked on the voyage home that they discovered their little stowaway. By that time, she had managed to eat ALL the cookies in the crate and was quite tired of the box. Even once they had found her, there wasn't much they could do with her at first. They could not turn back, and even if they had, they didn't know where she had come from... and she couldn't tell them!
During the trip, the ponies taught her their language, about themselves and their home. She learned they weren't Zebras at all, but some kind of similar creature. As they talked, she became more and more interested in Equestria and decided she wanted to see it for herself! However, before they even got there, the ponies began discussing how they were going to send her home! She didn't want to go home! Here she was, headed to a place no one she knew had ever been, and she wasn't even going to get to see it?
The morning Equestria came into sight, something very odd happened. Both Nyarai and one of the lifeboats completely vanished from the ship! Perhaps it was intentional. Perhaps it was an accident. Whatever it was, the end result of it was that Nyarai ended up completely alone and unsupervised in a strange land. She has spent the better part of a year wandering from place to place, sneaking rides on the railroads, seeing all sorts of the amazing and strange things she'd heard about, like socks and eyeshadow,(both of which she adores, and yet can't afford) and always trying to stay just one hoof ahead of the authorities, moving on whenever things start to get a little too close for comfort.

"SOMEPONY CATCH HER!"
This was a shout in a market square in Canterlot. Nyarai's head shot up from where she had been drinking water from a display fountain. She had always found it amazing, how plentiful fresh water was in Equestria, and just now, she had been wondering if the abundance of it was what made fountains gush, or if it was unicorn magic that she couldn't see. But the guard's shout had brought every sense to red alert! She shot a quick glance all around her and launched herself off in a seemingly random direction, just an instant before a Pegasus guard came down exactly where she had been standing.
To do the guards credit, they weren't trying to harm her. Not a single one of them had a weapon drawn, and some of them didn't even have weapons on them. Rumors and sightings of a little filly wandering the streets alone at all hours of day and night had been haunting the royal guard for weeks until a small volunteer guard group was put together to investigate. At this point, their only intention was to get her into custody and discover how she came to be alone. They didnt know how hard she would make it.
They didn't know anything.
Heart pounding, ducking under fruit carts and cafe tables, scrambling over mountains of crates and barrels, the little Zebra pushed herself through every kind of difficult obstacle, knowing that the adult ponies would find it hard even to keep sight of her, much less keep up with her. She dodged down a narrow dark alley and looked back over her shoulder. Good. Not even a Pegasus guard behind her! She heard a train whistle in the distance, and reflexively, she turned a corner sharply in that direction, and at full speed, she crashed into a relative brick wall of unicorn flank. Tall, white, and with a distinctive crest on his flank- She didn't know it, but she had just run into the head of the Royal Guard, Shining Armor. The two of them stared at each other in stunned surprise- then a guard shouted something from a great distance.
Shining Armor turned to look in that direction, and Nyarai used his moment of distraction to try and dart away from him! But one didn't become captain of the royal guard by having poor reflexes- the zebra filly felt herself plucked right up off the ground by unicorn magic before she'd made it a dozen steps away! She squirmed and kicked a few times in the grip of the levitation spell, but being unable to get any traction in the air, she had to think fast!
Nya started yelping loudly, as though in pain. "Oh! Oh! Please, put me down! It hurts, it hurts!" Shining Armor, startled and dismayed by the thought that he'd accidentally hurt her, dropped her instantly. And how did she reward this act of kindhearted concern? She dashed away as soon as her feet touched the ground! Shining Armor took a moment to realize he'd been tricked- he made a second grab for her with magic, but this time he just wasn't quite quick enough... She leaped off the side of a bridge, intending to land on the train tracks below- and was fortunate enough to land on the roof of a passenger car. There was just one scary moment of slippy-slidyness before she gained her balance, and then the little zebra looked back over her shoulder for one last look as the train rolled out of Canterlot. It had been fun- but she was ready to see what was in the Next town!
